Certification Statement As engineers, we at HIT Engineering value certain criteria when it comes to designing our client's projects. We strive to design projects with reliability, affordability and sustainability. After being presented with our project brief, we go about a design by studying current free standing bridges, followed by the construction of a few simple ‘models to soon come to an agreement on our most desired structure. Regularly, we are not satisfied completely with our first prototype and go about modifying it to meet the client’s needs as well as budget. For example, our current project is a bridge constructed of pop sticks to weigh less than 500g, but support more than 30kgs. The design we settled on was a very simple and common strueture which would be more then capable of completing the given task. However, we at HIT Engineering strongly believe in “thinking outside the box” and with that we that we developed a modified design which drew on several ideas from previously studied structures. The design of our bridge meets all the criteria and constraints in the brief. We are certain that our design will attract the attention of our client over others and will not falter when under applied stress. We believe that if our design would to be constructed, it would weigh less then 500g and capable of supporting static loads exceeding 30kgs over the 1210mm clear span. Not only will our design exeeed others in the presented tasks, it will also excel in affordability and sustainability. The design will be constructed purely pop sticks, strings and glue. An investigation into all forms of glue was carried out and in terms of strength and availability; the PVA was our most desired choice. Our bridge has been designed specifically to allow maximum compression and tension without failure. This goal was achieved by studying designs and how they withstood large forces. We discovered that the key for our bridge design to hold large weights lay in its ability to flex under load. To achieve this goal, we decided to incorporate the use of string into our bridge which would allow large tensile forces. At HIT Engineering, we have designed a unique bridge which meets our clients brief. Our bridge WILL hold over 30kg and WILL weigh less than 500g over the desired span.
