Overcoming Egypt's
settlement crisis with a new
sustainable future for her
inhabitants
Most Egyptians living in Egype today are
faced with overcrowded conditions due t0 a
burgeoning population in most of its towns
and cities. Bur surprisingly, the whole countey
lives on only five percent of its overall land.
The remaining 95 percent is consumed by
desert. To relieve some of: this pressure,
Professor Farouk El-Baz, an internationally
recognised scientist, proposed the notion of a
developmental corridor considered as a
‘parallel Egypt’ on the Desert of the West
Bank. It comprises « main highway connecting
north Egypt to the south, parallel to the Nile
River and 12 development avenues; each of
the avenues would be connected to one of the
over-populated cities and towns, This could
signal a new sustainable future for Egypt and
her inhabitants
The concept of ‘Future Egypt’ was
introduced to the school of Architecture and
Engineering at the Mansoura University as the
graduation project for 2005-2006. Students
led into groups. Each was allocated
one of the 12 avenues to develop through a
number of service-investment-productive type
projects. From the 90 projects, each student
was to develop one distinguished project.
