Grade Level: 9-12 Subject: Algebra Topic: Seeing Structure in Expressions

Objective: The students will be able to (SWBAT) construe material properly. Standards: CCSS.MATH.Content.HSA-SSE.A.1: Interpret expressions that represent a quantity in terms, factors, and coefficients. Materials: Class text book, pencils, pens, calculators, notepads, outline rubric or checklist. Prerequisite Skills and Knowledge: Math from grades 1-8, adding, multiplying, dividing, subtracting. Anticipatory Set: Walk into class and show a youtube video demonstrating the importance of higher level math. Input and Modeling: Input: Interpret complicated expressions by viewing one or more of their parts as a single entity. Modeling: Demonstrate how to solve expressions on the projector. Student Practice, Checking for Understanding and Evaluation: 1. A worksheet containing the material will be distributed among the class. 2. Repeated use of the method will be needed to complete this worksheet. Proceeding individual work, the class will break into groups and solve harder equations pertaining to the same topic. 3. Students will then receive homework on the topic, expressing what they have learned though the completion of problems. 4. Student will submit his/her own paper for the teacher to grade using the rubric or checklist. Closure: The students will receive a open-ended problem for extra points which will be completed in class.
