My Masters in Visual communication is a research by coursework, the program consists of three units of Design studio along two units of Research methodology and two electives one Filmmaking and other is Business planning. Since start we have to select a project that will last till the end as a thesis. My project is about the excessive use of social media by young users. As including USA, Australia is also the most rising country who is facing a lot of social media threats to their young generation like cyber bullying, exposure to inappropriate content, cyber crime and social isolation. The research I’ve done in first semester was mostly literature review along with research methodology where I looked for quantitative research in the form for statistics and demographics from different social media surveys. Then for qualitative data was derived from open-ended questions in the survey but primarily through focus group interviews of students a focus group of 20 middle school students. In my second semester I took a total different method of research, it was more towards the philosophy and art. I read the novels “The Lord of the Flies” the real psyche behind any child actions, “Nausea” by Jean-Paul Sartre where I explore the philosophical nature of existence and the challenge faced by an individual after left in alienation for a while, and “The stranger” by Albert Camus. The PDF’s I’ve attached with this word file are the Design studio final presentations from semester 1 and semester 2. So for my research units I’ve written 10,000 words and before last 4000 words, I was looking for a series of posters in a form of awareness campaign, which leads me to be a problem broadcaster rather being a problem solver. The readings, researches and artworks I’ve gone through in 2nd semester really helped me to analyze the social media threats in a very broad context to young generation where isolation is the major connected to all. For my visual outcomes now I will be exploring more into 3D installation art to communicate my idea, which can make one experience the existence of the problem by not only the sense of eye but also by the sense of touch. In another way I want to depict how our eyes touch what it sees, a look involving an unconscious touch, and the importance of physical touch in making us aware of the weight, depth and resistance of an object, art or space but more than that it gives you the real sense of physical interaction which so called social media technology has left behind the real value of social physical interactions.
