Schley County Court House History of the Terry Family From the information that we have available, the

Moses and Hannah Terry and James and Mary Terry clans have their beginnings, as slaves of John Terry and Elizabeth Hart-Terry of Warren County Georgia, the early 1800s. Around 1850, John Terry and Elizabeth Hart- Terry moved to Marion County Georgia with their slaves. As a result of territory changes, in 1857 (eight years before the end of the American Civil War,) Marion County was divided. New county boundaries were made, and a demarcated territory was named after William Schley (the governor of Georgia from 1835 to 1839). Subsequently, in 1857, due to the new territorial changes, Marion County became Schley County. On November 23, 1859, the town Ellaville of Schley County was incorporated. The town Ellaville named after Miss Ella Burton became the county seat of Schley County. The Terry family, along with their slave masters, John Terry and Elizabeth Hart- Terry were affected by the new territorial changes. They became incorporated in the town of Ellaville. After the Civil War and slaves were emancipated, many Terries remained in Ellaville; others moved to neighboring counties or migrated to other states. Although the Terries world was changing, they grew with those changes. The Terry Family has had family gatherings to keep the family intact. Hence, in 1980, at Rickshaw Inn
Cherry Hill, New Jersey, the birth of the National Terry Family Reunion, Moses and Hannah Terry and James and

Mary Terry clans was implemented. Contrary to the connection of the Moses and Hannah Terry and James and Mary
Terry, it is believed that they had other siblings. Currently, DNA capability is connecting family lines. We are in search for other family members. If you are a male Terry, and you are willing to take a DNA test to determine if you are connected to our family, please contact Dennis King, (313) 826-9592.
