Lesson 6 Heat Pump Electrical Systems Mince ee JHE ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS OF A HEAT PUMP CAN BE REPRESENTED BY WIRING | diagrams illustrating its power and control circuits. Although a wiring diagram may seem complex when viewed as a whole, it can be simplified by breaking it down into basic circuits. The way in which the overall system “fits together,” as well as the operating functions of the individual components, are easier to understand once you have mastered the skill of reading a wiring diagram. Wiring diagrams show the power circuit connections for the indoor and outdoor sections of a heat pump and the control circuit connections between thermostat, indoor section, and outdoor section. Its estimated that at least 75% of all heat pump service calls involve the unit's electrical systems. This statistic indicates that a good understanding of electrical systems and their circuits is a prerequisite to success as a service technician. Wiring diagrams generally are divided into two parts, power circuits and control circuits. Power circuits include the components that require line voltage, such as the compressor, condenser fan motor, indoor blower motor, and electrical resistance heaters. Power circuits often are designated on a schematic drawing by thick or heavy lines. These lines represent the wires that connect individual components. Control circuits in most residential heat pump systems are supplied with 24 V ac and usually are designed so that an individual circuit controls only cone function of the heat pump. For example, one circuit may provide the start- stop control of a motor by means of a relay. Another circuit on the diagram
