THE TOPSY TURVEY GIRLS

(Turn her one way, she is Topsy, turn her the other way and she is Turvey).

MATERIALS: Any 8ply Wool or Wool/mix. Wool required 1 oz. each of Pink or Peach & a contrasting colour. 3ply Blue - 3 ozs. Small balls of Yellow and White. Scraps of Red. 1 pr each Nos. 4 and 11 knitting needles. 2 small curtain rings. Crochet hook. Stuffing. ABBREVIATIONS: B, blue, R, red, Y, yellow, W, white. BODIES: (make 2 pieces each in Black and Pink). Using No 11 needles, cast on 20 sts. and work 18 rows in st.st. Cast off 5 sts at beg. of next 2 rows. Work 3 rows. Inc. each end of next 5 rows (20 sts). Work 16 rows. Dec. each end of next 5 rows (10 sts). Cast off. ARMS: Using No. 11 needles, cast on 14 sts and work 16 rows in st.st. Make 2 in Black and 2 in Pink. SKIRT: Using 3-ply doubled and No. 4 needles, cast on 97 sts and work 5 1/2 ins in moss st. Next row: p 2 tog. (moss st. 5, p 3 tog), rep to last 7 sts. moss st. 5, p 2 tog. Moss st. 2 rows. Cast off. BLOUSES: The Fronts (Make 2 in White). Using No. 11 needles and 3-ply wool, cast on 20 sts. and work in st.st for 2 ins. Cast off. The Backs: (Make 4 in White). Cast on 12 sts and work 2 ins in st.st. Cast off. Join shoulders and sides and crochet around neck.

TURBAN: (For Black Doll) Work in garter st. Using No. 11 needles and Blue 3-ply, cast on 47 sts. Dec. 1 st. each end of very row until 3 sts remain. Cast off. Fold the 2 long corners up to centre point and sl.st. at seams tog. Bow: Cast on 8 sts. and work 20 rows in K1, p1 rib. Cast off. Bind round centre with length of wool and sew to centre top of turban. BONNET: (For Pink Doll): Using Blue 3-ply, cast on 39 sts and work 14 rows in st.st. Cast off 13 sts at beg of next 2 rows. Work 16 rows. Next row: k2 tog. rep to end. Cast off. Sew up back seams. Brim: Using W, work 1 row single crochet round front of hat. Next row: Turn and work 1 sc in first space, 1 sc, 1 ch, 1 tr, 1 ch, 1 sc into second space, rep this shell edge to end. Fasten off. Crochet 2 chains about 4 ins long and sew on bonnet for ties. APRON: Using No. 11 needles and W, cast on 18 sts and work 2 ins in st.st. Cast off. Crochet round in shell patt as for bonnet. Crochet 2 chains about 4 ins and sew on for ties. COATS: (Optional). Using Blue 4-ply, work in moss st. Backs: Cast on 23 sts and work 2 1/2 ins straight. Cast off. Fronts: (2) Cast on 11 sts and moss st. for 2 1/2 ins. Cast off. Sleeves: Cast on 15 sts and work 10 rows. Cast off. Sew up side and shoulder seams. Insert sleeves. Crochet around if desired. TO MAKE UP: Place 2 pieces of Pink doll tog. right sides facing. Sew tog. right round, leaving waist open. Turn to right side. Sew up 2 pink arms and

sew on to body. Stuff arms and body. Sew up Black doll in same manner. Now place 2 dolls tog. waist to waist and sew securely tog. Sew on face features. HAIR: (For Black doll): Make large French knots round hair line. (For Pink doll): Using 2 strands of yellow wool, back stitch loosely round hair line. Crochet long chain and thread through skirt at waist. Put skirt on doll and tie on. Put on blouse, sew down back. Put on bonnet and turban, sewing on turban. Put apron on Black doll. Sew curtain rings to side of head of Black doll for earrings. Put on coats.
