The Web of North-Holland

Date: 2002
Site: Haarlemmermeer
Project architect: Prof ir Kas Oosterhuis
Design team: Kas Oosterhuis, Sander Boer, Ilona Lnrd, Yael Brosilovski, Rui Dias,
Michi Tomaselli, Petra Frimmel
Client: Province of North Holland

Spaceship. The Web of North-Holland made a successful soft landing on the Floriade World Exhibition site in the
Haarlemmermeerpolder in the Netherlands. The Web is designed in the weightless space of the computer. First in the
execution phase ONL unleashed gravity as an active force working upon the 3d model. ONL has sculpted the 3d model,
sculpting the data of the kneadable substance like digital clay. A variety of techniques have been used: output using the
milling machine, input with the 3d digitizer, modelling with a digital surface sculpting tool.
Twisted icosahedron. Started from the chosen sixfrequent icosahedron grid, ONL has invented an absolutely new
structural principle: a 3d triangular grid of flat and folded steel plates connecting the weighed normals, which are the lines
perpendicular to the surface of the nurbs model as direcetd to the inside. ONL realized the hotline between the digital 3d
model and the steel manufacturer. ONL wrote in-house an Autolisp routine which extracts the elements from the 3d model,
places them on a reference plane, flattens them and attaches the relevant data. Buckling points and angular rotations are
administrated in a database. All elements are unique in shape and thickness. It is important to apply a transparent coding
system for production and assembly purposes. In this process the 2d drawing plays no role. It is a file to factory process
where the digital 3d model of the designer communicates directly with the programmable cutting machines of the steel
manufacturer.
Generic concept leads to specific result. The innovative steel structure can follow in principle each possible double
curved shape. In this respect the ONL invention is of generic value for the building industry at large. The clue is to turn the
exception into the norm. Providing solutions for mass customization, and responding to forces in nowadays society
commanding individualisation of the production process. The Web has been assembled as a 1:1 mock-up in the workshop of
the steel manufacturer. Then after 3 weeks it has been taken apart, coated, transported and assembled on-site.
Paper thin skin. A similar file to factory procedure has been followed for the production of the triangular ultralight Hylite
aluminum panels. No triangle is the same, there is no repetition. The soft-edged triangular panels are folded over the curved
exterior contours of the steel structure. Hylite is a very elastic 2mm thin composite and is capable of absorbing internal
forces in the surface. These material characteristics have formed the basis of the ONL design for the robust construction in
relation to the seemingly fragile but vandal proof paper thin skin.

Open North-Holland Pavilion

The open North-Holland pavilion is an open-air meeting space. The visitors are invited to rest in the curved concrete bowls.
From there they look at 68 photographs representing the highlights of the Province of North-Holland. The long linear
sculpture which contain the photos is bent over the bowls like a giant multimedia snake. The visitors are immersed in the art
project, the art work functions as an the information carrier.
The dynamic 3d trajectory of the structure is a direct translation from an impulsive intuitive hand drawn sketch by Ilona
Lnrd. The sketch is a radical gesture of the human body used with the purpose to introduce instant spontaneity into the
built environment. This radical gesture is translated directly into steel and concrete. As the visitors move they merge into the
curved and folded space, their perception of movement in space-time is triggered. The sculpture and the visitor dance a
common path through space-time.
The course of the winding structure is a full 150 m long. The 3d sketch clones itself into a kind of DNA molecule of 68
sectors, containing one photo per sector. Programmable lights and loud speakers are built into the structure, passing visitors
trigger the sensors which drive the programmable content.

TT monument (

to fuse the motorbike and the driver)

Date: 2002
Site: Assen
Project artist: Ilona Lnrd
Design team: Kas Oosterhuis, Ilona Lnrd, Omar Resendiz, Chris Kievid, Rui Dias
Client: TT Monument Foundation Assen
The racer and his motorbike merge together to become a new entity: man and machine work together to achieve a great
performance. The body and the motorcycle become one indivisible whole, dynamically deformed by speed, emotion and
sensation. The driver and his machine are fused in speed. Each part of the fusion is in transition to become the other. The
wind reshapes the wheels, the human body fuses into the new man-machine body. The fused body performs a wheelie,
celebrating the victory and pride like a conquering horse. The TT Monument is the ultimate horse: strong and fast, supple
and smooth, proud and stubborn. The strong and yet smooth surface of the body evoke the fusion of sensuality and power.
The body of the TT Monument makes a proudhorsepower, the challenging upward lift of the front wheel when catapulting
the bike away from the banked curves of the TT Circuit.
The design started with a fast intuitive 3d sketch in the computer. From this 3d sketch a 1:20 scale solid foam model was
milled. A 3D digitizer was used to bring back the physical model into the digital design environment. The further intuitive
design process involved a sculpt surface sculpting tool pushing and pulling the surfaces, tweaking the curves. Sculpting
surfaces feels like digital clay. Natural aluminium is chosen for the robust exterior skin.
