MATH 240 HOMEWORK II

(Due: next class time for each section)

1. Consider a binary code with 9 bits (0 or 1) in each code word. An
example of a code word is 100101011. In each codeword, a bit is a zero
with probability 0.6, independent of any other bit.
(a) What is the probability of the codeword 100011011?
(b) What is the probability that a codeword contains exactly four ones?

2. A fair coin is tossed four times and the random variable X equals the total
number of heads. Find and sketch the cumulative distribution and
probability mass function of X.

3. The number of views of a Web page follows a Poisson distribution with a
mean of 1.5 per minute.
(a) What is the probability of no views in a minute?
(b) What is the probability of two or fewer views in 10 minutes?
(c) Does the answer to part (b) depend on whether the 10-minute
period is an uninterrupted interval? Explain.

4. Assuming that 6 in 10 automobile accidents are due mainly to a speed
violation, find the probability that among 8 automobile accidents 6 will be
due mainly to a speed violation?
