When referring to humans it is generally used for impregnating females who have trouble with becoming pregnant natural or those who do not want to have a male partner When referring to Animals, it can be used for selective breeding of mammals such as cattle, pigs, horses, etc. Another reason why it is used on animals is because it prevents the male counterparts from harming females during mating. Example, Male Horses can be very brutal when mating which can potentially harm the female.
