Everyman Assignment In your group, you will write and perform a short, modern version of Everyman.

Instead of Everyman, you will be creating an allegory about Everystudenta typical freshman who must safely make it to graduation (like Everyman to redemption/salvation).

In writing your allegory, think of the following: 1. What is the moral of the play you are writing? Medieval allegories/morality plays were created to teach the audience something. Everyman teaches them to avoid sin and temptation and rely on good deeds to achieve redemption. If you were to perform this play for a group of high school freshmen, what lesson would you want to teach them? 2. What virtues will Everystudent need to have with him/her? Everyman has virtues such as Good Deeds, Knowledge, Beauty, and the Wits. He also has false companions, such as Friendship, Kindred, and Goods. What virtues does Everystudent need to have to be successful in his/her high school journey? What false companions are there? 3. Who is like Death in Everyman? What major obstacle to graduation will Everystudent have to try to get around? 4. What vices or sins does Everystudent have to avoid? (Such as sloth, gluttony, avarice/jealousy, etc.)

Every member of your group should have a purpose in the group. You will need: A director (to keep everyone organized!) One/two writers (once your group has decided on the plot and characters) Lead actors (possibly including a narrator) Supporting actors (may include the director and writers)

You will perform your allegory for the other groups on Friday in class.
