Control Systems Engineering 1

CAT 1 16th May 2007 Answer all 4 questions in 2 hours

Question 1
(a) There are various stability criteria for linear control systems; Rouths criterion being one of them. Give reason(s) why it is preferred to use the others instead of Rouths. (b) Use Rouths Criterion to determine the stability of the 2 systems below and compare them.

Question 1(cont.)
System 1:

K ( s 2) G( s) 2 , H ( s) 1 s ( s 6)
System 2:

K 1 G(s) , H ( s) ( s 1)( s 3) s4

Question 2
A feedback control system is given by: K G(s) , H (s) 1 2 ( s 2) ( s 7)
In order to improve its stability a compensator C(s)= (s+1)is cascaded with G(s) Use the Root-Locus method to analyze the improvement. Confirm your results by any other method. Make any other conclusions on C(s).

Question 3
State the Nyquist Stability Criterion (NSQ). A unity feedback system has G(s) given as

K ( s 2) G( s) ( s 1)( s 3)( s 4)
Use NSQ to determine its stability. Confirm your results using the Root- Locus method.

Question 4
(a) Use the frequency curve, GH(jw), and the unit circle to define the stability of a system. (b) In addition, clearly indicate the gainmargin and phase margin on the relevant drawings.

Question 4 (cont.)
For the feedback control system given below, use the Bode plots to explain its stability status. Confirm your results using any other method.

K GH ( s ) s ( s 1)( s 4)
