Residency Effects on Aggression in the house cricket, Acheta domesticus

NOTE: You may use the exact below sentences without citation in your writing assignment.
Question: Does residency affect a male crickets motivation in pair-wise interactions with other male crickets? Hypothesis: Male crickets that are resident in a territory have greater motivation in pair-wise interactions because they have something to defend.
Prediction: If male crickets that are residents in an artificial territory are challenged by introduction of an intruder they will win aggressive encounters more than will intruders.

Hypothesis testing with statistics: Do our data fit our predictions?

Statistical hypotheses: Predictions specific to a particular experimental design
Ho = NULL hypothesis = assumes there is no relationship between our dependent and independent variables.

HA = Alternative hypothesis = assumes there is a relationship between our dependent and independent variables.

Chi-square test for Goodness of fit

Wins Resident Intruders Expected Wins

H0: Observed wins will be equal to that expected by chance (50% of total number). HA: Observed wins will not be equal that expected by chance (50% of total number). Go to http://www.graphpad.com/quickcalcs/chisquared1.cf m

You will conduct a Chi-square test for goodness of fit in order to determine if the observed number of wins for resident crickets is different from what we would observe by chance (assuming there is no relationship between likelihood of winning and residency status).

The statistical test will produce a p-value, based on your data. The p-value is the probability of obtaining this result (or a more extreme result) if the NULL hypothesis were true.
By convention in Biology, we reject our NULL hypothesis if our p-value is .05 or less
