PROJECT 3: Creative Project about a Social Issue


For this project you will be writing a creative piece about a social issue. You may choose to work on your own, in pairs, or in groups up to four people. Prompt: Write a creative piece about a social issue that is important to you. It can be a social issue that Luis Rodriguez discusses in Hearts and Hands or a separate social issue. If you work alone:

Choose a topic and genre below and write a meaningful, in depth creative piece You can collaborate to create a single piece You can all create your own pieces that all speak to the same theme or topic to create an anthology of pieces that work together

If you work in pairs or a group:


o Possible Social Issues to Write About: Gang violence Teen pregnancy Juvenile crime Single parent families Corrupt/biased police forces Mortgage crisis Injustice in the justice system Homelessness Drug and alcohol abuse Bullying Inequality in education Domestic violence Or your own topicjust speak to me first before you begin to write o Possible Genres: Short story Short play Street theater Series of poems Creative nonfiction essay (a true-story narrative based on your experiences or the experiences of someone you know) Guidelines for Writing: It is admittedly more difficult to grade a creative project than a traditional academic essay. I will be grading you based on the following: Your ability to explore a social topic in an in-depth, meaningful way Whether or not it is evident that you invested some real time and thought into your creative piece Your piece should be between 600-800 words. Your writing should be in correct MLA format, which includes using 12 point, Times New Roman font, double-spacing, one-inch margins all around, and correct MLA format heading and page numbering. There is more information about MLA format on the class website. Do the best work you can! If you have questions or feel that you need help, you can see me during my office hours, which are listed on your syllabus.
