Materials needed- Teacher Materials: Nutrition facts (candy wrapper), whiteboards, whiteboard markers, paper towel, worksheet Student Materials: Pencil

OBJECTIVE: When given an equation, the student will be to draw the correct number grouping with 80% accuracy by 2/20/13. Common Core State Standard: 3.0A.1 Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 x 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 x 7. BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS: Students are expected to give their looking eyes, their listening ears, and their quiet mouths. Students should be following along with the teacher and actively participating when asked to do so. Students will be reminded to take the lesson seriously so that all can benefit from instruction. If problems arise, we will address the situation individually. OUTLINE OF LESSON:

Anticipatory Set: (5 min) Teacher will show nutrition information on the document camera. Students will take this information and draw a visual representation of the groupings. Objective: Today, we are going to learn how to create a visual representation for an equation. Rationale: This will help you if you need to share objects among friends and pick between two choices to make sure you get the fair amount. Input: You know that you can group numbers in different ways. Numbers can be represented by objects or symbols, which can help you visualize the amount that you have. Number groupings can be different from one another (bigger, smaller) or they can be the same. You know how to match a number grouping with an equation. Modeling: Lets use the equation 2 x 2. I am going to draw 2 circles, since 2 x 2 means 2 groups. Next, I am going to draw 2 Xs in each circle. This shows me that I have 2 groups of 2. Lets use the equation 4 x 1. I am going to draw 4 circles, since 4

x 1 means 4 groups. Next, I am going to draw 1 X in each circle. This shows me that I have 4 groups of 1. Lets use the equation 3 x 3. I am going to draw 3 circles, since 3 x 3 means 3 groups. Next, I am going to draw 3 Xs in each circle. This shows me that I have 3 groups of 3. Checking for Understanding: (Thumbs up/thumbs down) Teacher will show an equation on the document camera, and then draw a visual representation of this picture on the white board. Here is the equation 2 x 4. Does the picture that I drew match this equation? Thumbs up for yes, thumbs down for no. Here is the equation 0 x 3. Does the picture that I drew match this equation? Thumbs up for yes, thumbs down for no. Here is the equation 1 x 1. Does the picture that I drew match this equation? Thumbs up for yes, thumbs down for no. Great job! Guided Practice: Teacher will hand out individual white boards to each student. Teacher will show an equation on the document camera, and the students will practice drawing this equation. There will be 5 equations that the students will work with. Here is an equation. Please draw the number grouping on your whiteboard and turn your board over when you are done. I will then draw the correct picture on the board, and you will see if your picture matches mine. If it is wrong, please fix it, and hold it up when it is correct. Independent Practice: Teacher will hand out a worksheet to each student. On the left side of the worksheet will be 5 equations, and on the right side there will be space for students to draw the equations. Here is a worksheet. Look at the equation carefully, and draw on the right side the visual representation of this equation. Have fun! Closure: Great job! You learned how to create a visual representation for an equation. Evaluation: The teacher will collect the students independent practice sheets in order to assess if the student met the objective. When given an equation, the student will be to draw the correct number grouping with 80% accuracy by 2/20/13.
