Lessons from Maycomb County A burst of frigid water escaped from the end of the fire hose!

The water was intended to break up a group of blacks that was demonstrating peacefully for their civil rights, and it worked. The defeated group scattered in many directions, and their demonstration had once again ended at the hands of racially biased Southerners. Discrimination is an issue that has plagued civilization since the beginning of time. People have been treated unfairly for a variety of reasons. This problem always takes a toll on society. In Harper Lee's award-winning novel,..IQ Killa Mockingbird. the social injustices that result from racial, gender, and social class discrimination are demonstrated throughout Maycomb County and shape the identities of the characters. First of all, social injustice involving race shapes the identities of the characters in the novel. For example, [ern and Scout try to build a snowman with very muddy snow. Scout remarks, " J em, I ain't never heard of a nigger snowman" (189). Because the town is racially biased, Scout grows up believing that using this racial slur when referring to blacks is acceptable.
