GRAMMAR HINTS What is functional grammar? Functional grammar view language as the resource of making meaning.

It helps you to analyze the patterns of language and the thing you can do with them.

There are three aspect in Context of situation (linguistic consequences) - field (transitivity) refers to organizing activity or subject matter [whats going on]. - tenor (Mood) refers to who is taking a part. [ the social relationship between those taing a part] - Mode (Theme) refers to how language is used.

Intertextuality refers to the way text refers to other text. There are 3 metafunctions of language : - Ideational metafunction : How language is used to represent expereience or to organize, to understand and express our perceptions of the world and our consciousness. - Interpersonal metafunction : the use of language to set up and sustain interaction between people using language. - textual metafunction :how language works to create connected, cohesive and coherent discourse.

Modal adjunct : perhaps, surely, apparantely Vocatives : dear love, mary, doctor, etc.. Interpersonal Finite : did, didn't, can, can't
