Polysemy
The association of one word with two or more

distinct meanings. A polyseme is a word or phrase with multiple meanings.

Example: Fix (attach, arrange, get ready (food or drinks) ,repair, punish, set right (the hair). Table (a piece of furniture, dining table, facts/ numbers, maths, (multiplication / addition tables) Star (those shiny things in the sky, an excellant actor/actress)

Synonymy
Words that are similar or have a related meaning to

another word. Some synonyms can inject a different meaning than the one intended.(connotation) Example: gloomy To express feeling like down, upset. But gloomy also can give different view from connotative meaning.

Word that represents different categories covered by

a superordinate. Example:

Antonymy
Antonymy is the sense relation that exists between

words which are opposite in meaning. Three types of antonymy:


Gradable antonyms Complementary antonyms Converse or relational antonyms

Gradable antonyms

Do not represent an either-or relation but rather a more-less relation operate on a continuum:

Long - short love - hate rich poor (very) big, (very) small.

Such pairs often occur in (blow) hot and cold, binomial phrases with and: (search) high and low.
Complementary antonyms express an either/or relationship and these are 'absolute' opposites. if you are dead, you cannot also be alive.

Converse or relational antonyms Sometimes called relational borrow or lend, buy or sell, wife or h opposites. They all express usband. relationships between two (or more) people or things. Brian sold the car to Michael and Michael bought the car from Brian.
