he American Solar Energy Societys (ASES) National Solar Tour, now in its 15th year, is an opportunity to see how your neighbors use solar energy and live in climatesensitive, efficient buildings. Year after year, the tour brings neighbors together to learn about local smart building practices, solar installations and solar installers. We see real people in real buildings in our own neighborhoods. The ASES National Solar Tour is possible through the volunBy Brad Collins teer efforts of more than 5,000 building owners across the country. They generously open their doors to show the community what they have done to become more sustainable. These building owners are recruited by hundreds of volunteers who want to share their knowledge. More than 10,000 volunteer hours are spent to organize each years tour. We owe special thanks to all who give of their free time to make this experience happen. Also, we offer special thanks to the tours sponsors, whose financial support makes this national effort possible: Conergy, Trina Solar, Sanyo and Sun Crystals. This magazine, Get Started, is produced as an annual bonus issue of SOLAR TODAY magazine. Its an educational resource Brad Collins is the combined with a list of local installers, meant to help newcomexecutive director of ers to solar technologies shop intelligently. Get Started offers the American Solar Energy Society (ases. basic information on solar technology and efficient buildings, as org). a supplement to what tour-goers learn from neighbors who have opened their solar-powered homes. Our goal with this magazine is to provide a ready resource to encourage more solar deployment. Keep the magazine as a reference you can use today, tomorrow or next summer. The ASES National Solar Tour empowers and educates. The most common response is: Why arent we all doing solar? Why isnt every building this efficient and sensible? Our research shows that the two biggest barriers to broader deployment of solar energy technologies are government and utilities. This November, you can help change one of those barriers. Please consider renewable energy issues when candidates seek your support and votes. Our future can be brighter if leaders follow what most Americans want: a swift transition to a secure, sustainable energy economy.

efore writing a check for a rooftop solar array, spend some money inside the house. The economics are simple: Its cheaper to save energy than to make energy. If you want to offset $100 a month in utility bills, the right place to start is not on the roof, but under it. First, look at your heating bills. If you heat with natural gas or fuel oil, its easy to find the separate monthly item even if its included among your electricity charges. If you live in the wintry northeast and burn heating oil, you might pay $1 per square-foot annually to heat a house. That often adds up to more than $2,000 a year. Most homeowners can save 20 to 25 percent by caulking air leaks around windows, doors, foundations and soffits. Check the attic insulation, too. Its cheap to add an extra layer of batting or blown-in cellulose. Its more expensive to swap out old single-pane or metal-frame windows for more efficient modern insulated triple-pane wood- or vinyl-frame windows. The cheapest fix of all is to renew weather stripping around all doors and window sashes and put insulating covers on pet doors. The most direct way to find cost-effective fixes, especially in an older house, is with a professional energy audit. Check with your utility company to see if it offers free or reduced-cost audits. The standard price for this service is $200 to $400. It may include a blower-door test to locate air leaks. Spending $2,000 on insulating upgrades may cut heating costs by 50 percent and recoup the investment in about three years. The Department of Energys website, eere.energy.gov/consumer, includes some interactive worksheets to help you figure out how much more insulation you may need (depending on your climate), how much it may cost and, depending on what youre paying for heat energy today, how long the payback period may be.
air-conditioning system, consider a high-efficiency groundsource heat pump (see page 24). If you heat with oil or electricity, consider installing a modern high-efficiency gas furnace or ground-source heat pump. A $6,000 investment in insulating and HVAC improvements might pay for itself in five or six years. Look into energy-efficient appliances. The typical refrigerator built in 1980 costs about $154 in electricity to run for a year, at todays average rate of 11 cents per kilowatt-hour. A modern high-efficiency refrigerator runs for about $55 a year. The average homeowner would save $99 a year enough to recoup the cost of the new refrigerator in a few years. A modern front-loading clothes washer uses far less hot water than the old top-loaders, and that saves money. See page 66 for information on very efficient appliances. A new water-heating system may be cheaper still. A simple warm-weather solar hot-water system may cost less than $2,500 to install, especially if you do it at the same time you replace your electric water heater. Depending on where you live, it may cut your water-heating costs by 40 to 50 percent. A large family with lots of kids uses plenty of hot water for bathing, laundry and dish washing, so this can be a significant power saver. See page 12 for more detail. Most water heaters can be made more efficient. Fix all leaks. Turn the thermostat down to 122F (50C). Be sure all water lines, and the tank itself, are fully insulated. Use low-flow shower heads. Most people already know that the easiest way to cut your electric bill is by replacing incandescent light bulbs. Incandescent bulbs waste about 95 percent of their energy as heat. Theyre so wasteful that federal law now bans their sale after 2013. If you run six lamps for six hours each night lets say one light each in the kitchen, dining room, living room, bedroom, bathroom and hall using 15-watt long-life compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) would save $72 in the first year over incandescent bulbs. Thats why CFLs now account for about 28 percent of the market and growing fast. Does someone in the house leave the TV on for hours at a time? With its cable box, it burns about 310 watts while on. TV sets (and computers too) can draw 5 to 10 watts continually, even when shut down, unless you pull the plug. Solution: Use a switchable power strip. A large attic fan may draw 370 watts, but thats cheaper than an air conditioner, which draws about 1,900 watts per ton of cooling capacity. GS

Track your energy bills on a spreadsheet or use one of the online tools listed on page 10.
In slashing utility bills, the best bang for the buck comes with energy-efficiency measures.
Heating and cooling systems can usually be improved. Be sure to change the furnace air filter quarterly. Get ductwork cleaned and air leaks sealed, and make sure that ducts are insulated at least to local codes. Your ductwork should be set up to heat (or cool) re-circulated air from inside the house, but the furnace should draw combustion air from outside you dont want to burn fuel using air youve already paid to heat. If its time to replace the heating or

number of studies make it clear that when people know how much power theyre using, theyre more likely to conserve. The problem is that most people dont know how much energy they use. Your car tells you how fast its going, which is a rough index of the power it uses, but your home appliances dont come with speedometers. However, there are now several easy ways for homeowners to gain better insight into their energy use.
hard-wired or 240-volt loads like central air conditioning, furnace fans, attic fans, electric dryers and water heaters. The following are device-monitoring products: Kill-A-Watt (p3international.com/products/consum er/) is available as an individual plug device ($35) or power strip ($75), both with a display showing real-time power and accumulated energy use. Plug Smart (plugsmart.com) is a wall-socket monitor displaying real-time energy consumption, carbon footprint and projected annual cost. The company also makes smart surge protectors, which eliminate vampire power consumption and include timers to automatically shut off charging devices, such as cell phones.
Whole-Home Monitoring
Sophisticated and comprehensive whole-home systems measure power at the meter or service panel. Data is recorded in real time, and a display in the kitchen or another central location shows the instantaneous power used and accumulated energy consumed over time. The following products include sensors that enable them to be used by virtually all homeowners regardless of the utility supplier or electric meter type: The Energy Detective TED 5000 Home Energy Management System (theenergydetective.com) shows energy use on a wireless display or on the interTED monitors home energy net via Google Power Meter use, allowing residents (google.com/powermeter/ to see in real time what about). The system can coortheyre consuming in kilodinate with a net-metering watt-hours as well device, so, in addition to conas dollars. sumption, you can monitor the output of a photovoltaic system. Price: $239. PowerCost Monitor (bluelineinnovations.com) also uses a wireless display to show energy use in kilowatthours and dollars and cents. It predicts electric usage for the month based on current usage and shows peak energy cost within the last 24 hours. Price: $119. As they adopt smart meters, some utility companies may offer in-home displays or web-based portal sites. Other utilities may rely on third-party products to provide these capabilities. See sidebar for some of them. GS

Device Monitoring
A plug-based meter allows you to measure the power use of a single device (such as a television, toaster or window air conditioner). This is especially helpful in finding vampire loads devices that continue to consume energy even when turned off. Many older televisions, VCRs and stereo systems are notorious for having large vampire loads, so they can operate a digital clock or be ready to respond to a remote control. The solution: Put them on a switchable power strip. Plug-based meters wont work for large

n most parts of North America, the best bang for your solar energy buck is with domestic solar water heating (DSWH). Its a no-brainer in the desert Southwest and in semitropical Florida and Hawaii. A complete DSWH system can be installed for $3,000 to $10,000, depending on its size and complexity. These systems are now eligible for the 30 percent federal tax credit. At todays energy prices, over the life of the system, the operating cost is about 20 percent lower than a conventional gas water heater and 40 percent lower than an electric one. As gas and electricity prices rise, DSWH will look like a better and better deal. The price of a system depends on two main factors: system size and local climate. A large family uses a lot of hot water for bathing, laundry and dish washing, while a couple with no kids living at home can use a much smaller system. Solar water-heating systems come in two flavors: passive and active. In warm climates, a simple passive system can provide plenty of hot water.
One of the most common uses for solar water heating is to heat pool water. Pool solar collectors are lighter in weight and less expensive than DSWH systems. The size should be 50 to 100 percent of the surface area of the pool. The larger the solar collector area, the warmer the pool will be in cool weather. The pool serves as the storage tank, and the filtration pump circulates the pool water through the collectors. A solar collector can provide all the heating necessary for a swimming pool, but hot tubs and spas need a backup or booster heater.

siphon systems can be used in cooler climates if theyre converted to a drain-down configuration. When temperatures drop near freezing, valves open to drain the collector, often into a weather-protected indoor storage tank. When temperatures rise again, the collector system can be filled again, either from city water pressure or by using an electric pump to push water back up from the indoor storage tank. Because of the elaborate automatic control systems, draindown systems are considered active rather than passive. The evacuated-tube system is more expensive than other passive systems, but in some climates, much more efficient, so it takes less space on your roof. Solar heat is collected in double-walled glass tubes arranged with one end high. Each tube is built like a thermos bottle liner, with a vacuum between the walls. In the center of the tube is a copper pipe containing propylene glycol, a non-poisonous antifreeze. Propylene glycol is the same stuff sold in autoparts stores as pet-safe antifreeze for your car; its also used in some food products. While the outside of the glass tube remains cool, the copper pipe turns hot, and the glycol boils. The steam rises to the top of the pipe, where it heats a manifold. Water flowing through the manifold is heated quickly. The glycol steam in the copper pipe condenses back to liquid and flows to the bottom of the tube, making a continuous convective loop. Evacuated-tube systems work in both warm and cold climates.

A kilowatt (kW) is 1,000 watts, and a megawatt (MW) is 1 million watts. You buy electricity in kilowatt-hours (kWh), which is energy (as opposed to power). For instance, if you run a 100-watt light bulb for an hour, youve used 100 watt-hours of energy. If you run it for 10 hours, youve used 1 kWh, for which the average household would be billed 11 cents (at $0.11/kWh). A 1 kW PV array can produce 1 kWh per hour in direct sun. If sunlight falls directly on it for five hours a day, it may produce 5 kWh that day.

Microinverters Some newer grid-tied systems replace the large central inverter with several microinverters, attaching one microinverter to the back of each PV module. Power coming off the module is now 230 volts AC and can tie directly to the household service panel. A major advantage is that if one module is shaded or broken, performance of the rest of the system is unaffected. You can monitor the performance of each individual panel on a home computer or your smart phone. Net metering Your utility company may not offer net metering. If it does, it typically does so under terms determined by state law or by your public utility commission. The rate the utility will pay for the power you sell will therefore vary widely state to state and city to city. Some utilities may pay more for power during high-load periods, as in summertime late afternoons. Check with your utility company for details, or look up your local information at dsireusa. org. If your utility doesnt offer net metering, encourage them to do so.

modules through a charge controller (also called a regulator), an electronic device that produces a smooth flow of current at the desired voltage. From the charge controller, the power can go to a set of storage batteries and then on to the inverter. Todays commercially available PV panels come in three versions: Single-crystal (or monocrystalline) modules are currently the most efficient that is, 1 square meter produces the most electric power. They must be mounted in a rigid frame. Multicrystalline (or polycrystalline) modules are made of cells cut from multiple crystals, grown together in an ingot. They are slightly less efficient than single-crystal modules. Thin-film modules are made by depositing or printing thin layers of materials on glass, metal or plastic substrates. Theyre considerably less efficient, so you may need to give them a lot of space to generate the same amount of power. However, theyre now less expensive and, depending on the substrate, can be very robust and flexible. One

kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity each month, that works out to about 20 kWh per day. If you get an average of five hours of direct sunlight daily, youd balance your electric use with about 4 kilowatts (kW) of net-metered PV power. A 2 kW system would offset about 50 percent of your bill.

controller. The charge controller can take power directly from a PV array or from a wind turbine or diesel generator or hydroelectric source anything that can feed steady DC can be a charging source. Power taken off the battery goes to the inverter for household use. If you live on the grid, a battery storage system is usually unnecessary. It can, however, substitute for a backup generator, assuring youll have power during any utility company outages. That means your small business can have reli-
able refrigeration in hot-weather brown-outs, and you can operate a fan-driven natural gas furnace when an ice storm takes out electrical power lines. All About
By Mick Sagrillo
Mick Sagrillo (msagrillo@ wizunwired.net) of Sagrillo Power & Light is a smallwind consultant and educator.
Q. It seems like it is always windy at our house. Is a wind turbine a good idea?
Maybe. First you need to know how windy it really is. Whats the average annual wind speed in your area? To begin, check the wind map for your state at windpoweringamerica. gov/wind_maps.asp. Then, get a more detailed evaluation from a trained wind site assessor. This may be a wind turbine installer, or it might be an independent contractor. Independence brings a possible lack of sales pressure to buy before the prices go up. The few hundred dollars that you spend on an evaluation of your wind resource is a small percentage of the total cost of a wind system and is the smartest investment you can make before you commit to the wind system of your dreams.
Wind
That depends on what your goals are for the system. Most people will only install one wind turbine on their property, and they usually want the system to offset the bulk, if not all, of the electricity they consume on an annual basis. So, the size of the system you need will be pegged to how much electricity you consume annually. Obviously, it will save money if you first pare down your electric bill by investing in energyefficient appliances. Rule of thumb: Every $1 you invest in energy efficiency will yield about $3 in reduced costs for generation. It is foolish to install a very large wind system only to squander your generated electricity on wasteful appliances. That said, a wind turbine for a residence in the United States will cost somewhere between $18,000 and $90,000, before federal tax and any state incentives. Thats a broad range because people incur a wide range of electricity bills based on lifestyle choices, house size, number of occupants and appliance use. Again, that depends. The power available in the wind for conversion into electricity is a function of the cube of the wind speed. This means that very small increases in wind speed will yield enormous increases in power. For example, increasing from 8 to 10 mph results in a 100 percent increase in power available in the wind. And jumping from 10 to 12 mph gives us another 72 percent increase. Obviously, the power available for conversion to electricity is very sensitive to wind speed. As your wind speed increases, so does the cost effectiveness of your investment. Wind systems are best located in open areas, upwind in the prevailing wind direction from obstacles (trees, towers, buildings). Urban and heavily treed areas are seriously compromised, offering a less-than-optimum wind resource. A second answer to the question of where to put a wind turbine is, on a tall tower. This may come as a surprise to some, but the wind generally sees the tops of trees and buildings as the effective ground level. Putting a wind turbine on a tower only just above the trees in the suburbs is akin to put-
ting that same turbine just above the ground in an open farm field. It may generate some electricity, but not much. No. First, at roof level, the wind is weak and turbulent, and wind turbines, regardless of design, need clean laminar wind flow to drive the rotor. Turbulent wind flow is seriously compromised and has little power in it, regardless of how gusty it may feel. Second, roofs are simply not designed to support the forces placed on them by wind energy conversion devices, and manufacturers compensate for this by using smaller rotors, irrespective of the generator capacity. Keep in mind that the generator can only generate electricity based on the amount of wind energy it can collect, which is based on rotor size. A small rotor produces a small amount of electricity. Pay little heed to the advertising hype these are basic rules of air flow and physics. Finally, does your insurance company know what you are planning to bolt on your roof, and does it approve? Yes, they are, but without one, you may as well leave the wind turbine in its box. Remember that you are not buying a wind turbine, but a wind system. That system includes the turbine, tower, foundation excavation, concrete and rebar for the foundation, an underground wire to run from the tower to your house, all sorts of electrical and wiring components, a controller and inverter, a crane to erect the system,

While certainly not rocket science, there are a number of skills required to correctly and safely install a wind system. These range from surveying the site for the tower and foundation to electrical wiring and electronic trouble-shooting skills to a good mechanical understanding of how the system works. It is quite possible that a Jack- or Jill-of-all-trades could safely and successfully install a wind system, but it is not advised for the weekend handyman or gal. If you are interested in helping with the project, ask your installer what you can do on your own and where you might be able to lend a hand.

The best place to go for this information is the manufacturer of the equipment you are interested in purchasing. Be cautious of companies that cannot recommend an installer or that dont have many installers to recommend. Contract with an installer close to where you live. When you need help, you dont want to have to wait six months or more for your installer to get back to your part of the country. That depends on how much you spend on the system, who does the installation and how it is maintained. Well-designed systems can last for decades. If you buy based on price and look for the cheapest equipment available, the system may last weeks or months. Quality comes at a price. The same holds for your installer. A good relationship with an installer with a good reputation is well worth the money they charge. Keep in mind that there is no such thing as a maintenance-free wind turbine. While the system may not have any easily serviceable parts, all wind systems need annual attention. This may mean thorough inspections of the turbine, tower and other components. If you ignore a wind system by never visiting it, it will eventually come down to visit you, with catastrophic results. It has often been said that the life expectancy of a wind system is directly proportional to the owners involvement with the system. There are many involved owners out there who are starting their third decade of enjoying windgenerated electricity. GS

the weather and time of day, the PV array must be coupled with either a battery bank or alternative electricity source, such as a generator. Efficiency & Economics: PV is ideal for offsetting air-conditioning loads because its peak power production is a nearly perfect match for maximum air-conditioning power draw on summer afternoons. A PV system installed to help power an air conditioner may pay for itself quickly in a hot, sunny climate with high electricity rates. The match against heating load is weaker but worth pursuing in the context of new construction or a major remodel incorporating significant passive-solar elements. More Information: For a breakdown of state and local incentives applicable to HVAC efficiencies, see dsireusa.org. Find a local PV, HVAC or solar water-heating installer in the Get Started Buyers Guide, beginning on page 34. DC Airco (dcairco.com) and Securus (securusair.com) manufacture 48-volt DC, 18,000-Btu air conditioners that can be coupled with solar energy off grid.
coolers are approximately 75 percent more efficient than central air-conditioning systems, according to the DOE. IEC manufacturers claim efficiency thats up to 90 percent better than conventional air conditioners. The only power draw is a fan to push air through the heat exchanger and on into the house, and the fan may be run off a PV array, eliminating the cost of electric power. However, an IEC scaled to cool a house may evaporate 3 to 5 gallons (12 to 20 liters) of water per hour, which may be a
significant expense in desert country. More Information: Popular IEC manufacturers include Coolerado (coolerado. com), OASys (oasysairconditioner.com) and Phoenix Manufactering Inc. (evapcool.com). The Evaporative Cooling Institute maintains a directory of other manufacturers at evapcool ing.org. GS

Does It Pay?
ow long will it take for a new solar or wind electric system to pay for itself? That depends on your local climate, utility rates and incentives. In sunny or windy states with expensive electricity, the payback is faster than in calm or cloudy states or where power is relatively cheap. The most important factors for making solar an attractive investment include high electric rates, financial incentives, net-metering policies and good sunlight (almost all of the continental United States is within plus or minus 20 percent of Miamis sunlight level).
Net-Metering
Where net-metering laws exist (in 43 states, plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico), solar energy offsets the retail cost of the electricity generated. In some regions, solar systems are allowed to operate on a time-of-use rate schedule, enabling users to sell back electricity to the utility at peak rates, which can be even
per watt (up to 50 percent of system cost), cutting the up-front expense. Others have performance-based incentives (PBIs) that pay from 10 to 40 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for power produced over three to 10 years. Some also use solar renewable energy credits (SRECs, also called green tags), which are similar to PBIs in that they produce value based on system performance. SRECs represent the bundle of legal rights to the green part of each kilowatt-hour produced by a solar system. SRECs are valuable to utilities in certain states, like New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania and 18 others, because those utilities must comply with renewable portfolio standards (RPS) requiring that a certain percentage of the electricity they sell come from solar sources. New Jersey SRECs are currently the most valuable and have recently traded in their auction market for as high as 57 cents per kilowatt-hour, thus earning five times the price of the electricity savings they are also producing. In most other states, SREC values are much more modest.
Net-metering means that when you send power out to the grid, you earn a credit toward grid power you used at other times.
Resale Value
A theoretical increase in property resale value occurs in homes with generating systems because of the reduced utility operating costs. According to a 1998 Appraisal Journal article by Rick Nevin and Gregory Watson, a homes value should increase $20,000 for every $1,000 reduction in annual operating costs from energy efficiency. The rationale is that the money from the reduction in utility bills can be spent on a larger mortgage with no net change in the monthly cost of ownership. Nevin and Watson calculate that historic mortgage costs have an average aftertax effective rate of about 5 percent. If $1,000 of reduced operating costs is put toward debt service at 5 percent, it can support an additional $20,000 of debt. The borrower (homeowner) pays the bank the amount they saved on the utility bill, so the total monthly cost of home ownership including utility costs is identical. Solar systems appreciate over time, rather than depreciate as they age. This is because of the increasing annual savings as electric rates rise. All the calculations in this article assume that electric rate escalation will be 5 percent. If so, the generating system will save 5 percent more value each successive year, and thus gain from the 20:1 multiplier effect. The property resale value will then increase 5 percent per year compounded.
more valuable. Time-of-use rates vary electricity price by time of day, with higher rates during times of power shortage (for instance, when air-conditioning loads are high). Thats when the utility must pay more to purchase electricity from generators. These higher electric rate periods often occur in the heat of the day, when solar systems are most productive. Direct incentives can include tax benefits, such as credits or depreciation. The most celebrated recent incentive is the federal tax credit for solar systems, which was expanded on Jan. 1, 2009. The credit is for 30 percent of the system cost and can be coupled with state, local and utility incentives. The Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency (dsireusa.org) lists state and federal incentives around the country for all types of renewable energy and energy efficiency. Some states have rebates of up to $4.50

Feed-in tariffs (FITs) are yet another type of performance-related incentive, but one that foregoes the net-metering benefit. The customer continues to pay the regular electric bill but gets paid for all electricity fed back to the grid. Gainesville, Fla., has a FIT of 32 cents per kilowatt-hour for 20 years, but it is so popular that the program is currently sold out. Ontario, Canada, also has a FIT program, with payments between 44 and 80 cents (Canadian) per kilowatt-hour for 20 years, depending on system size and mounting type. Please consult a certified tax advisor to check the applicability and taxability of incentives for a particular situation.

This appreciation cannot continue forever, as the increase in resale value runs into the second limit, which relates to the systems remaining life. PV modules are warranted at 25 years to work at 75 to 80 percent of their capability when new. Calculations of long-term resale value should take this into account.
Financing
Financing the system is important to many buyers. For many homeowners who finance their solar systems using home equity loans, the cash flow will be positive, either immediately or within a few years. The cash-flow calculation compares the estimated savings on the electric bill to the cost of the loan. Monthly loan cost is the principal plus interest payment required to pay off the loan, less any tax savings. Home equity loans are often excellent sources of funds because the payment terms can be long, the interest rates on real estate-secured loans are relatively low and the interest is usually tax-deductible, so the net monthly payments are often quite low. As stated, in many cases, the net loan payment will be less than the savings the solar system will generate. Over time, electric rates usually rise, so the savings increase. But the loan cost generally stays relatively constant, so the situation gets better and better for the system owner, even as the savings from the system are paying off the loan. Once the loan is paid off, all the savings go to the owner. Those who dont have equity available can explore other options, such as Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) community financing programs, whereby a government agency (city, county, region or state), can arrange a loan for a solar system and allow it to be collateralized and paid back on the property tax bill. The program, which was pioneered in Berkeley, Calif., has spread to several locations around the country. Because PACE programs make the solar loan part of the property tax bill, it is senior to the homes first mortgage, which makes the first mortgage more risky. This has caused Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (who buy and insure most of the nations first mortgages) to step in and request a halt and changes to the PACE programs to limit their risk. At press time, this story was still unfolding. See dsireusa.org for more and updated information on PACE community financing. Two rapidly growing options for homeowners are commercial financial products applied to residential situations. These are solar power
purchase agreements (PPAs) and solar leases. In both cases, a third party (someone other than the consumer or the installer) owns the system placed on a consumers roof. The system and its benefits are provided at little or no up-front cost to the homeowner, reducing the homeowners investment, risk and need to find financing or cash.
Third-Party Owners
Solar PPAs are agreements where the system owner sells power to the consumer at previously agreed-upon terms. The consumer is buying kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy only, not the solar energy system. Solar leases are rentals, where the consumer leases a solar system from the owner. In both cases, the parties owning the systems are underwritten by investors who can use the tax benefits and pass along some of those savings in the form of reduced utility bills or reduced rental charges. The third-party owners are taking the risk of system ownership and want to be paid for that risk and the use of their money, so typically, the homeowner will end up paying more over the long term with a PPA or solar lease than they would have if they paid cash or took a loan. With third-party ownership, the homeowner does not end up owning the system, but usually has the opportunity (but not the obligation) to purchase it at fair market value (FMV) at the end of the term of the agreement. FMV will be somewhere between what a new system would
cost and scrap value. By IRS rules, FMV must be decided at the end of the term and cant be stated up-front. Over the long haul, the cheapest way to get a solar system is to pay cash, but that requires cash. The next cheapest way is to take out a home equity loan, but that depends on the ability to borrow. The next cheapest after that are the solar leases and PPAs, which eliminate the cash or loan requirements and make solar affordable to anyone with decent credit. The most expensive way to get solar is to do nothing now and wait, because utility rates and bills will rise and incentives will go away. In PPA, lease, loan or cash sales presentations, consumers should pay careful attention to the expectations of future electric rates or rate of increase in rates. Nationwide, rates have increased about 2 percent annually since 1990. Theres good reason to believe rates will rise faster in the future, as utilities start switching away from cheap coal and deal with new limits on carbon and pollutant emissions. But there are also things that may keep rate increases low. For instance, shale bed methane may keep gas prices low, which could keep electricity prices down. Eventually, wind and solar will become cheaper than other sources, potentially curbing long-term rates. Be cautious of high PPA or lease escalator rates (anything over 3 percent). Over time, rapid increases in your obligation to the PPA or lease company could cause your future monthly payment to become larger than the future savings. It is important to compare the solar investment to other investments on an even basis. For a fair assessment, critical analysis should look at compound annual rate of return, cash flow and resale value. For much more detail on the variables that affect the results, the methods of financial analysis, and example results for many states, please see the article at ongrid. net/papers/PaybackOnSolarSERG.pdf. Solar makes economic sense for many, but only a hard look at the numbers will tell if it makes sense for your property. The reader is encouraged to check it out. Run the numbers, get evaluations and proposals from at least three solar providers and take them to a CPA for review. That way, the smile on your wallet can be as big as the smile on your face! GS

he Buyers Guide beginning on page 34 lists more than 2,500 installers across the country, so you can certainly find an installer near you ready to build a photovoltaic (PV) or solar waterheating (SWH) system on your roof or in your yard. Its easy to narrow the list down to four or five names located near your zip code and then call them up for estimates. Find a more up-todate version of this list at findsolar.com. Installing a PV or SWH system is a complex job, requiring both technical expertise and the ability to navigate the thicket of permits and incentives to get your project approved and financed. Choose an installer in much the way youd choose a contractor for any major construction project. Here are some things to consider: Is your installer eligible for the state or local incentives you want to use? Rebates often are paid only to projects installed by approved personnel. California approves rebates only on systems using modules and inverters on an approved list and constructed by installers on an approved list. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority maintains a list of about 120 eligible installers for projects it partially funds, with another 90 names on a provisional list. Pennsylvanias Sunshine Program has its own list of approved installers. You can work with a local installer whos not on the list, but you wont be eligible for the program in question. When talking to installers, be sure to ask them about the incentive programs they have access to and how that will affect your financing options. Whats the track record? How long has the company been in business, how many systems have they installed and how happy are the customers? A reputable business should be happy to put you in touch with satisfied customers. Attend a meeting or two of your local American Solar Energy Society chapter (see page 70) and ask people there which installers have a solid reputation. Finally, look around

their work? Who, for instance, will be responsible for roof leaks? Ask about leasing programs and financial terms, of course. The estimator will have a good grasp of local incentives and grant programs, and should be able to reel off a list of banks offering green loans for home energy projects. (Banks and leasing companies often have their own lists of approved components and installers.) The estimator may explain the tax implications of local incentives and how they affect your federal tax credit, but you should also talk to an accountant about these issues. Once the estimates are in, compare them carefully. Make sure all the bases are covered: Are the estimates all for the same size system? Are there performance warranties? Who

the neighborhood for solar arrays, and ask the owners about their experience with the installer. Consider whether you want to go with a very large regional or national organization, with a deep field of expertise and a sophisticated inventory and delivery infrastructure, or with a friendly and responsive local installer, who may be able to answer an emergency phone call after a tree falls on your roof in the middle of the night. The large company may offer a better initial price due to economies of scale, but it may be slower to respond to warranty and service issues later on. The local family-owned company lives on its reputation for service. Its smart to contact three promising candidates and call for estimates from each. Expect to spend an hour with each estimator. Check with your homeowners insurance agent to find out whether there will be an extra charge to cover a new array against hail or wind damage.

WHAT DID OUR MODULES AND SYSTEMS LEARN FROM OUR CELLS?
Quality is our most important benchmark and the foundation for our extended product portfolio, which includes solar cells, modules and turnkey solar systems. To ensure that each and every product is of the highest quality, we pay special attention to every detail. A high-quality solar system, after all, depends on high quality of its individual components. However these exacting quality standards do not just apply to our products alone. Our services, our staff and the way we communicate also measure up to our stated standard of being highly reliable.

Daniel Felsch from our Quality Division is especially vigilant in making sure that this standard is maintained.

Energy-Efficient Appliances
nergy Star (energystar.gov) a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy identifies the most energyefficient appliances available. Clothes washers: Front-loader washing machines require the least water. The Electrolux (electroluxappliances. com) EWFLS70 came out on top of the performance tests this year, registering a modified energy factor of 3.29. The winning Electrolux model can handle 4.7 cubic feet (133 liters) or 29 lb (13 kg) of laundry. Wash time is an impressive 18 minutes. Prices start on the high side, however about $1,800. The second-place winner, the Frigidaire (frigidaire.com) FAFS4474, is a little more financially palatable. Prices start at about $1,050.

Dishwashers: For maximum efficiency, look for dishwashers with air-dry instead of heatdry cycles. The Bosch (bosch-home.com) SHE68E and SHX68E were the top full-size performers this year. Testing showed they can handle 1.19 loads for every kilowatthour consumed. A half-load option for small loads, a flow-through water heater and a triple filtration system boost efficiency. Prices for both models start around $1,800. Refrigerators: Topping the Energy Star list for full-sized side-by-side refrigerator/ freezers was the Whirlpool (whirlpool.com) GSS26C5XX. With an expected demand of 499 kilowatt-hours per year, it uses 32 percent less energy than the federal standard for a refrigerator its size (26 cubic feet). Prices range from $1,700 to $2,600, depending on features. Mike Koshmrl

Estes Park, Colo.: Architect Thomas Beck designed this offgrid passive solar house for himself. Large south-facing windows heat a massive floor of stamped and stained concrete, and theres an indoor solar-heated pool. A bank of 32 Trojan deep-cycle batteries stores up to 70 kilowatt-hours of power, feeding three Trace SW1024 inverters. Batteries are charged by a 1.4-kilowatt (kW) Astropower photovoltaic array and Sunslate solar shingles producing another 1 kW, with two 400-watt Southwest wind turbines and a backup 30-kW propane generator.

To maximize the eectiveness of your solar energy system, you need to know how it is performing. A Kipp & Zonen pyranometer accurately measures the solar radiation available to your system in real time. Comparing this with the power generated allows you to calculate the efciency of the system. A drop in efciency indicates the need for cleaning, ageing or a fault, allowing you to schedule preventive maintenance and to monitor your return on investment. Make that dierence and contact Kipp & Zonen for the solutions available. Visit us at booth 2129 at Solar Power International 2010, Los Angeles, CA

In 1999 we put in a photovoltaic system and the electric bill dropped to $5 a month.
By Margot McDonald, AIA, LEED AP
s the proud owner of both solar electric and solar water-heating systems on my home for the past 10 years, I relish the predictability of our monthly utility bills. Our solar electric system is relatively small at 1,600 watts (1.6 kilowatts) for a 1,700-square-foot house. We Margot McDonald were fortunate to have optiis chair of ASES and mum site conditions to take teaches architecture at California Polytech- full advantage of the sun. While these are not a strict requirenic State University. Contact her at chair@ ment for using solar, we selected a true south-facing shed ases.org. roof on our backyard-facing den and installed the roof-mounted array at a near-ideal tilt a 30-degree pitch, which is close to our latitude in central California. A tall evergreen and a mountain peak to the west send us a little shade in winter, but the system has performed beyond our expectations. In 1999, when we were in the market for photovoltaics (PV), the bank savings rate of 0.5 percent was close to what it is today. We wanted to improve the yield on a $10,000 certificate of deposit, and putting our money on the roof seemed like a great alternative. We have no regrets! We were also fortunate to have one of the best solar electric buy-down programs in the country. At the time, the program offered between $3 and $4.50 per watt installed, plus a solar tax credit. In the end, we paid about $9,600, including the wiring and inverter. The inverter and panels have been 100 percent trouble-free. We chose polycrystalline modules. The panels look like a shiny blue-tinted version of wafer board or oriented strand board, with slivers of the glassy PV material tightly packed together to form a solid collector surface. At the time, monocrystalline panels would have been more efficient, but the polycrystalline units fit our budget and have worked just fine. With two people in the household, one working full-time off site and the other with a home office at 50 percent time, our energy consumption is about 250 kilowatt-hours per month. At an average cost of 12 cents per kilowatt-hour through our local utility,

we paid only about $45 month even before putting in the PV system. Even so, we took full advantage of all available energy-efficiency options. When we bought the house, its appliances were already near the end of their useful lives. So we bought an Energy Star-rated refrigerator to replace the clunky 80s-era antique, a new high-efficiency dishwasher and a front-loading clothes washer. We replaced the electric clothes dryer with a natural gas model and put in a programmable thermostat. We earned utility rebates on most of these purchases. Now, our biggest consumers of energy are the computers, printers and LCD TV. We dont have children, and our three indoor cats recharge in the sun. Since installing the PV system, our electric bills have averaged less than $5 per month. This leads me to another solar strategy we used, daylighting and passive solar design. Natural light takes the place of electric light during the daytime. Thats a key to solar living. Sunlight provides a much better, more dynamic working and living environment, and it reduces the size of our solar electric system. We have two deep-well skylights, one in the kitchen and one in the main entry. They produce light without excess heat. We installed a 10-inch solar tube in our shower. It looks like a recessed light fixture, flush with the ceiling. Many a visitor to our house has asked where the light switch is located, and we have to explain that it isnt electric. We also love the moonlight shining through the solar tube. This was a do-it-yourself project that took about a day and a half using our own (unskilled) labor. The solar water-heating system was installed in the 80s, long before we purchased the house. It has required minimal maintenance, mostly related to the thermal controls, and were thankful for its continued operation. The house isnt perfect. Built in 1952, its riddled with air leaks, and the window placement is based on a cookiecutter design rather than solar principles. Well fix these issues some day. Rebates are now available for energyefficient windows and doors, so maybe well do it soon. We found that solar is easy and worthwhile. It is certainly affordable where we live. A new law, AB 920, requires California utilities to compensate net-metering customers for electricity produced in excess of on-site load over a 12-month period. That means we should be in even better financial shape going forward. Well get paid for years ahead, for work we did years ago. Its just one of the joys of going solar! GS
