THE MOST EXPENSIVE PARLIAMENT BUILDING IN THE WORLD

If you thought the refurbishment of Kenyas parliament was expensive, think again. The Palace of Parliament in Romania is not only the largest civilian building in Europe, but its also the heaviest and the most expensive administrative building in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. The palace covers a floor area of 360,000 square metres under 700,000 metric tonnes of steel and bronze, 35.3 million feet of marble, and 3500 metric tonnes of crystal glass. It was constructed by Aedifica Carpati using largely local materials, including 480 chandeliers, 1409 ceiling lights and mirrors, and doors made from walnut, oak, sweet cherry, elm and sycamore maple. Machines had to be moved inside to complete weaving the 200,000 square metres of woollen carpets, velvet and brocade curtains adorned with embroideries and passementeries in silver and gold. Seven hundred architects and 200,000 people were involved in its construction. The 12-storey effort of architect Anca Petrescu has 1000 rooms and an underground capacity for 20,000 cars. It costs more than $4 billion to run it annually, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
