academic year Xinachtli staff. As we approach a new school year we are again faced with the disappointing reality that the number of underrepresented students such as the Chicana/o and Latina/o students at UCLA rises minimally if at all. Furthermore, with the constant threat of a 100% cut in funding for all academic preparation programs in the state of California it has become more difficult for students to get much needed access to information on colleges and universities. Even with the recent victory, we had as students with the PLEDGE referendum, in order to ensure that the Chicana/o or Latina/o representation and presence at UCLA continues to grow, we must extend our hands to the young in high schools and community centers so that they too can join us in the universities. Thus, we must commit ourselves to be present in the community and assist youth in entering higher education with an understanding of their own responsibilities. Xinachtli was created in 1998 as a response to the effects of proposition 209, which decreased the number of entering Raza students at UCLA, by 50%. Currently, Xinachtli has serves four sites Santa Monica High School, West Adams Preparatory High School, the Pico Youth and Family Center, and Civitas School of Leadership. Through peer advising, tutoring, cultural/political workshops, and youth dialogue, Xinachtli seeks to address the specific needs that Raza and other underrepresented students encounter in high schools with the philosophy of holistic development. This philosophy aspires to develop the self-reliance, selfesteem, and self-determination within students so that they become more critical and build leadership within their respective communities. The personal statement section of the application gives you an opportunity to give the hiring committee more insight into who you are, what your experiences have been, and where you are headed. The degree progress report is also an important part of the evaluation process. The hiring committee will use your degree progress report in order to get a glimpse of your academic history. It is important to note that the hiring committee does not have any GPA requirements for employment to our project, what the committee does look at is your academic progress, and how you have dealt with problems that may have come up in your past. We have found that students with some history of academic difficulty have great insight into University policy, and their experience is valued. The resume is requested for evaluating work experience and to see what types of community-related activities you have engaged in. One thing we always try to focus on and make sure that applicants have a good grasp upon is the number of hours required in this type of position. Working with the Xinachtli Project is not your typical 9-5 job and we ask many volunteer hours out of staff because what our youth and community needs goes far beyond the 8 to 10 to 15 hours that staff is paid. We do all that we can within our capacity and give more of ourselves for the sake of the betterment of our community and would ask the same of you. We hope that through your interest in Xinachtli you can become a part of our family and staff. We encourage you to stop by our office in the Student Activities Center 106, and get to know our staff. If you have any questions about the application process, pay rates, or any other issues dealing with the hiring process, feel free to contact me, the current Access Coordinator, Stephanie Suarez at 310-531-0589 or at mecha.ac@gmail.com Once again, thank you for your interest in MEChA de UCLAs Xinachtli Project.
