NATIONALISM

ABSTRACT Nationalism is an ideology and social and political movement that emerged along with the concept of nation itself of the contemporary age in the historical circumstances of the Age of Revolutions (Industrial Revolution, Revolution bourgeois liberal revolution) from the late eighteenth (XVIII) century. Nationalism could be understood as a concept of identity experienced collectively by members of a government, a nation, a society or a particular territory. Nationalists strive to create or sustain a nation based on various notions of political legitimacy.The nation-state emerged in Europe with the Treaty of Westphalia (1648). Nationalism remained an elitist phenomenon during part of centuries after the treaty, but it was during the nineteenth century when it spread widely throughout Europe and gained popularity.
