4. Use Get Set To Read on page 282 as a guide through lesson 1 o 5. 6. 7. 8. Direct students to read the main idea sentences to learn what this lesson is all about. Discuss the main ideas as a whole group.

Read pages 282-283 as a whole group Use Teach on page 283 for discussion Continue through the rest of the lesson pages 284-287 Use the Talk About It sections on 284-286 to discuss the text while reading as a whole group 9. Use the Reading Skill worksheet (Unit Resource page 84) during the lesson regarding the reading on pages 286-287. Complete the work sheet as a whole group 10. CLOSURE: When the reading is done and students have completed the reading skills worksheet, have them write in their Social Studies journals o Use Review/Assess and the lesson review on page 287 There is a writing rubric and answers on page 287 as well

11. When students are done writing, have them work independently on the Vocabulary and Study Guide worksheet (Unit Resource page 85) o Students will work in class and finish for homework if they need more time F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? The worksheets will be collected and informally assessed for completion and accuracy based on correct answers. The writing students do in their journals will also be assessed informally based on accuracy and complete sentences. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will know the students understand the concepts provided in this lesson if they can effectively identify the three different forms of government and how they are similar/different. Being able to identify vocabulary words will also be a good indication they understand the concepts of the lesson. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? This was a very introductory lesson on government. The entire lesson should be pretty basic to teach to include the concept of the government. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? The most challenging part of this lesson is going to be differentiating between national, state and local governments to the students. I think the characteristics of each might be a little confusing for the students.

3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? An extension on this lesson is included in the textbook, pages 288-291, describing how local governments provide services such as firefighting. This lesson provided good literature on firefighters and how important they are to communities. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? I would use the Re-teach Mini-lesson for this lesson, graphic organizer 8, to help students better understand the differences in government. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? This lesson has a suggested instructional time of 30 minutes which doesnt seem like it would be enough time. I think the lesson might need to be shortened or integrated with other subjects such as a reading block for more time. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part of writing this lesson was actually figuring out where to start. Because its the beginning of a unit, it is important to make sure background knowledge is activated and students know the expectations of the lessons to follow. Also, since there is a lot of reading, figuring out where to incorporate the discussions and activities can be challenging. This would mainly be up to the teachers discretion and what they feel they are most comfortable with.
