A WebQuest for Kindergarten In Social Studies, Math, and Communication Arts Designed by Selene Bahena 000131059@pirates.ncmissouri.edu

Webquest Teacher Pages Introduction This webquest is a performance-based task required for completion of ED275: Technology for Teachers, a course offered in conjunction with the completion of the Associate of Arts in Teaching transfer degree. This lesson is about learning how our American flag has changed over the years and the importance of the preamble in our nation. Kindergarten students will visit pre-selected websites to find answers to specific questions regarding a flag of their choice as well as to recognize some of the changes that have been made to the preamble and the reason it has been modified. The task assigned to students will be a poster paper where they will attach a picture of their flag and write the name, date, and number of stars and stripes of their flag. Each student will have a different flag and at the end they will put together all the flags and will form a book with it. Each student will also get to present their flag. Learners Anchored in kindergarten Social Studies GLEs and focusing specifically on the history and importance of todays flag, this webquest is the culminating activity in a kindergarten unit on the history of our country. The lesson involves some math as well as Communication Arts. Before beginning the webquest, students need to know the following: In terms of prior knowledge, the Kindergarten students need to be able to define the following terms based on the unit just completed: stars and stripes representation, history, country, author and addition. The students also need to know basic information about why the U.S. has had many flags in the past and why they are different as well as learning the preamble that will be

recited every morning in class. In addition, the kindergarten students should also be able to identify some U.S. flags and have certain counting skills as well as some writing skills. Students also need basic computer and Internet skills in order to accomplish this webquest. They will just be clicking the links provided and looking for the main information which should be easy to find. They will have assistance at all times in order to accomplish their project. GLEs/CLEs Social Studies Identify the flag as a symbol of our nation and why there have been so many changes looking back at the US history. Students will also be looking at the preamble several days before we recite it every morning. Demonstrate listening behaviors (e.g., prepares to listen, listens without interruptions) with teacher assistance. Students will also be able to compose text with the teachers assistance. Students will develop an awareness that text and pictures provide information.

Sort items according to their attributes. Students will be counting the stars on their flags and then the stripes.

MoSPE Standards addressed in this unit include: Standard 1, Content knowledge, including varied perspectives aligned with appropriate instruction. The teacher understands the central concepts, structures, and tools of inquiry of the discipline(s) and creates learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful and engaging for all students. Quality Indicator 1: Content knowledge and academic language Standard 2, The teacher understands how students learn, develop and differ in their approaches to learning. The teacher provides learning opportunities that are adapted to diverse learners and support the intellectual, social, and personal development of all students, Quality Indicator 3: Cooperative, small group and independent learning. Standard 5, The teacher uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages active engagement in learning, positive social interaction, and self-motivation, Quality Indicator 1: Classroom management, motivation, and engagement.

Standard 7, Student Assessment and Data Analysis, The teacher understands and uses formative and summative assessment strategies to assess the learners progress, uses assessment data to plan ongoing instruction, monitors the performance of each student, and devises instruction to enable students to grow and develop, Quality Indicator 5: Communication of student progress and maintaining records In addition to the learning outcomes mentioned above, this webquest also helps students develop the following thinking skills: Critical thinking (evaluation): As the kindergarten students complete this webquest they will be utilizing their critical thinking skills as they will be putting their finished flags in numerical order. They will also be finding the name and number of their flag on the internet and will have to add up the numbers of stars that their flags have. Creative Production: As a concluding activity for this specific webquest, the Kindergarten students will be responsible for sharing with the class the information they found about their flag. Their flags will be put in order by the dates and made into a book. Process To successfully complete this webquest, the allotted time required is expected to take a total of three social studies classroom periods. Students will have the first day to choose the flag that they want to do and finding some information over it. The next class period they will be finding the last of their information they need and cutting and gluing their pictures on their poster board. Students should have enough time that second day to finish up. The third day students will be putting them in order by dates. The next class period the students should be able to present their flag to the class. Students will just be expected to find the date of their flag, know the number of stars and stripes it has, and what each star and stripe represents. They will also be learning the preamble in many ways. Students will be able to get as much help from me as they need. Modifications for Exceptional Learners For students with behavior problems, they will be seated in the safety seat. For students with hearing impairments, they will be provided with a narrator to read the words and students will also be told several times of what their assignment is. For students with visual impairment, a magnifier will be adjusted to their needs when they need to get on a computer. These students will also be sat in front of the room at all times.

For students with developmental delays, the teacher will give them extra assistance. Students will also be provided with ideas about how they are able to complete their project if needed. Pre-selected Internet websites include: http://www.law.ou.edu/hist/flags/fedflag.shtml Students will be taking a look at all of the National/Historic American Flags. All of the flags are different and students will each pick one making sure that no one else has the same one. This webquest has pictures that are big enough for them to see if they click on them. The name of the flag is also provided as students will need to provide that information as well. http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagfact.html This is a link that students will go to after they have chosen their flag and have counted the stars and stripes themselves. This link provides the flag dates. Students will also be able to see if they counted their stars and stripes correctly because that information is included in this link. http://www.gamequarium.org/cgi-bin/search/linfo.cgi?id=3840 This will be a great link for students to learn about the US history and why the preamble is so important. a great way that they can learn it fast and easy while they enjoy it. Students will have fun watching all the great animated pictures as well as the music that comes along with it. Students will quickly learn it.

Evaluation Students will be evaluated by how wisely they use their time. I will be making sure that they are using their time appropriately. Students will need to have the correct information when their project is due. That will show me that they knew exactly what they were looking for. Students will also be evaluated in their participation and presentation. Students will be expected to share with the class the information they learned about the flag. Also, all students will be participating in reciting the preamble.

Conclusion In completing this webquest, the Kindergarten students will gain knowledge about that the history of the United States flag. Kindergartners will also have more confidence in speaking in front of others. This will be a fun webquest that they will love. They will also exercise their reading and math skills. Introduction Future authors you will all be putting together a book. It will be a book about American flags. Each author will be responsible for finding information about an American flag that you will choose. When the book is done each author will be presenting their page they created. The preamble is a great symbol to this nation just as the flag is. We will be learning the preamble in order to be able to recite it every morning.

The Task

Poster to be completed. Search for the corresponding information that relates to your flag. Have your poster ready to be put in the book

The Process 1. You will visit the first website in order to choose your flag. 2. You will visit the other websites to look for the information you will need. 3. Be prepared with scissors, glue, color pencils, crayons, and or markers. (I will also provide some) 4. You will need to put your information on the poster board and have it ready to help make the book. You will be responsible for visiting the pre-selected websites. Conclusion In completing this webquest, you will learn information about that the history of the United States flag. You will also have more confidence in speaking in front of others.
