JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH

CHAPTER ONE: A GREAT DISCOVERY 1. In May 1862, Professor Otto Lidenbrock discovers a 300-year-old book in an ancient bookshop in Hamburg, Germany. It belonged to Arne Saknussemm, a renowned Icelandic explorer. 2. A note slips out. It has writing in Runic symbols. 3. Axel decodes the secret message by reading the text backwards. It gives instructions on how to proceed to the centre of the earth. 4. The professor decides to leave at once; and asks Axel to go with him! 5. Axel is reluctant, but is encouraged to go by his sweetheart Gretchen, who promises to marry him on their return.
