Four girls are huddled up in a bathroom. They (0) looked about 14, 15 years old. One of them, the domineering one, pulls out a slim box from her handbag, and from it, a cigarette. She (1) put one end in her mouth and lights the other end, taking a long drag. Ahhh, how relaxing, she says, through a cloud of smoke. Her friends (2) looked at her, thinking how adult and cool she (3) must look. Noticing the curious glint in her friends eyes, the smoker pulls out the cigarette box and opens it in front of her friends. Wanna try? she asks slyly. Eager hands (4) have reached out.. This is the scenario most of us are fed with when it (5) came to cigarettes and young people. Most adults (6) would like to believe that the only way teens are introduced to cigarettes are through their friends who (7) will tell them it is cool. But in reality, many teens actually make a conscious choice to start smoking, regardless of whether their friends introduce them to the habit or not. Factors like living with family members who (8) smoked, psychological dependency, personal curiosity and constant bombardment by rampant advertising, are usually not looked at closely. This has resulted in 40,000 to 50,000 teenagers picking up the cigarette daily . And this figure points to Asia alone. And according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), studies have shown that smokers who start at a young age (9) will have found it harder to quit. Closer to home, the WHO recently found that in Malaysia, an average of 50 teenagers took up smoking every day. A 1999 study showed that nearly one in five Malaysian teens are smokers. Research also shows that 30 percent of boys aged 12 to 18 are smokers. As for the girls, in two studies conducted in 1996 and 1999, it (10) is found that the number of teen female smokers almost doubled from 4.8 to 8 percent. Thats a lot of teen smokers in this country!
