Equine Therapy at Diamond Ranch Academy The psychological and emotional benefits of working with horses have been

recognized increasingly by therapists treating young people who have behavioral problems. Diamond Ranch Academy, a Utah-based residential treatment facility for teens, is one school that is using equine therapy successfully. The therapy helps to teach students valuable lessons about relationships and trust in a safe, nurturing environment. Through the schools certified Equine Assisted Program (EAP), students interact with horses under the guidance of a licensed EAP therapist and reap the benefits daily. Research has shown that interacting with animals decreases stress levels; reduces feelings of anger, hostility, tension and anxiety; improves social functioning; and increases feelings of self-esteem, empowerment, patience, and trust. The Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) is the leading international nonprofit association that uses equine therapy to address human development and mental health needs.
