How do I approach the TOEFL?

The Institutional PBT: also called the Institutional TOEFL. This test is administered by English language institutions around the world. However, universities and colleges normally do not accept this test for admission unless it is used in a local context (in other words, if the English language institution is located in close proximity to a university or college, then the university or college might accept it for admission). There are no plans to phase out this test. Which kind of TOEFL Test do I need to take? The student must ask the educational institution which type of TOEFL Test it accepts. Different universities accept different TOEFL tests. For example, the University of California, Davis accepts the IBT, ETS PBT, Institutional IBT (from its own English language institution, and even the CBT (even though this test has been almost entirely phased out). Which TOEFL Test is the easiest: the IBT, the ETS PBT, or the Institutional PBT? ETS has tried very hard to make the tests equally difficult. Most students feel that the IBT is more difficult because it contains more difficult reading and listening tasks--and it contains a Speaking Section. Some students feel that the Institutional PBT is easier because it does not always contain a writing section--and it contains a grammar section. Different students will have different reactions to the different tests. How should I study for the TOEFL Test?

You should combine an "in-class" approach with an "out of class" approach. In other words, you should study a TOEFL preparation material such as Beat the TOEFL: Mastering the IBT DVD intensely--and you should practice speaking with native speakers and reading native English materials as much as possible!

How To Take Tests

Doing well on English examinations - or any examination for that matter - depends not only on your knowledge, but also on having a good strategy. Time Required: 20 minutes

Here's How:

Do not insist on completing each question before going to the next. By insisting on completing each question, you loose time and become nervous.

If possible, go through the entire test answering the questions you are sure you know. Go through the test a second time working out the answers to more difficult questions. Once you have gone through the test twice, see if any of the questions asked can help you answer any really difficult questions. If you have a strong feeling about a question when you first answer it, don't go back and change it later. Play the odds: If you don't know the answer, write something. In a 4 choice multiple choice question you have a 25% chance of being right. Do not cheat! Taking a test is as much for you as it is for your teacher. If you cheat, you won't help yourself in the long run. Do not translate from your mother tongue! Don't block when listening. Limit yourself to what you know. Look for time signifiers when having to conjugate. Throw out the ridiculous answers in a multiple choice question. Don't try to be too funny or clever.

Remember that tests not only given to test your ability, but also to help you learn what you need to focus on to improve your English. If you don't understand why you have made a mistake, make sure to ask the teacher about that mistake in a latter session. Being embarrassed about mistakes will never help you improve, so ask!
