TOPIC: Tapeworm infections in human INTRODUCTION: More than one third of adults in the United States are considered obese, this fact cause some of these adults to go thru desperate measures to become thin. A group of ladies back in November 2009 were featured on the Tyra Banks show of women who intentionally ingested tapeworms to lose weight. There have been other reports made such as one from the NY times about a woman ingested tapeworms while eating 6,000 calories a day and still lost weight. Tapeworm infections can cause major health complications. Some tapeworms are more harmful than others. Pork tapeworm (Taenia solium), beef tapeworm (Taenia saginata), fish tapeworm (Diphyllobothrium latum), dwarf tapeworm (Hymenolepis nana) and dog tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus) are the most common tapeworms in human. IV. PORK TAPEWORM (Taenia solium): A. Pork tapeworms are approximately 5 to 10 feet long. B. Pork tapeworms are from eating undercooked or raw pork that has tapeworm lavae. C. Pork tapeworms are found all around the world, such as South America, Africa, The Middle East and Eastern Europe. Affects millions in Latin America.

BEEF TAPEWORM (Taenia saginata): A. Beef tapeworms are approximately 10 to 15 feet long, but in some cases they can grow up to 65 feet long. B. Beef tapeworms are from eating undercooked or raw beef that has tapeworm lavae. C. Beef tapeworms are most common in North American.

FISH TAPEWORM (Diphyllobothrium latum): A. Fish tapeworms are the longest tapeworm. They can are usually approximately 30 feet long, but in some cases they can grow up to 100 feet long. B. Fish tapeworms are from eating undercooked or raw freshwater fish that has tapeworm lavae. C. Fish tapeworms are common in Asia and other tropical counties that eats raw fish such as Eastern Europe.
