Keep Louisiana Beautiful (KLB), the states non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to litter prevention and waste reduction, recently received $3,900 from Dow Chemicals DOWGives Louisiana Community Grant Program toward its Seeding for a Better and More Beautiful Tomorrow project. In partnership with Dow Chemical, KLB will distribute cypress seedlings to the community while promoting environmental sustainability and protection of Louisianas natural resources in January 2013. Designated distribution points will be coordinated near six different plant locations with representatives from affiliates handing out seedlings at each location. Attached to the seedlings will be an informational card with instructions on how to plant and care for the tree, as well as information on the Dow and KLB partnership. We believe in the power of even a small group of Louisianans interested in being proactive with helping keep Louisiana beautiful, Leigh Harris, KLB Executive Director, said. We encourage the community to support this event and stress the importance of preserving Louisianas natural resources to other communities. The project will advocate the importance of community greening and environmental sustainability. Approximately 3,000 people will benefit from this project, including communities in and around the six Dow plants. KLBs program will support the mission of Keep America Beautifuls Get Growing and National Planting Day initiatives. Held for the first time in September 2012, National Planting Day encouraged citizens to plant species native to their area to benefit the commerce, safety, health, property values and infrastructure of their communities. Get Growing is an initiative aimed at growing the awareness of the importance that beautification and greening plays in Americas communities. The initiative is specifically centered on the need for community vegetable and fruit gardens, restoring vacant lots in underserved neighborhoods, increasing the number of trees in public spaces and helping to bring natural beauty to built environments. All of these activities aim to bring individuals together and help establish pride, cohesion and a connection to ones community. ###
