Carolina Hernandez Professor Purvin Education Field Experience EDUC 230-02 Spring 2013 Ice Breaker Activity-NJPTS #3 Multiply

Yourself Grade: 8th Subject: Middle School Math Directions: 1. Each student will randomly select a math problem from a bag that I have created. I will make sure that the problem is appropriate to their skill level. (I will try to make sure that the answer to all of the problems is not a large number but also, enough to go with the game.) 2. Once all of the students have a problem in their hands, I will give each of them five minutes to solve the problem and even I will do a problem myself. 3. When everyone is done with their problems, I will start and share my answer with the class and then give the same number of facts about myself. When I finish, I will go around the room and even take volunteers. I will have each share their answer and then share facts about themselves. *If a student gets an answer wrong just address where they got it wrong and work to get to the right answer so that there is no confusion its a learning experience, and it helps the students know that its ok to make mistakes. Materials Needed: Note cards- these are really for my use of writing down the math problems Paper- the students will be able to solve the problem on a separate sheet of paper Pencils

Bag Sources: After hearing the example in Professor Purvins class about the student that used toilet paper, it really inspired me to think of a similar concept that could relate to math. This was a way to have students see that answering a math problem with a large or small number could be good or bad for them.
