Carolina Hernandez Professor Purvin Education Field Experience EDUC 230-02 Spring 2013 Lesson Plan 1 Grade Level:8

Subject: Mathematics Topic: Linear Equations

Objective: The students will be able to solve equations with multiple factors and coefficients; they will be able to graph their work. Standards: CCSS.Math.Content.8.EE.C.7 Solve linear equations in one variable. CCSS.Math.Content.8.EE.C.7a Give examples of linear equations in one variable with one solution, infinity many solutions, or no solutions. Show which of these possibilities is the case by successfully transforming the given equation into similar forms, until an equivalent equation of the form x=a, a=a, or a=b results (where a and b are different numbers). Grade Level: 8 Strand: C Analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations. Materials: notebooks, textbook, pencils, calculator, handouts (worksheets),markers Prerequisite Skills and Knowledge: The meaning of certain variables and equations. Knowledge on multiplications and division. Anticipatory set: The students will walk into class with graph being drawn on the board. I will provide coordinates and ask the students if they are able to solve it in order to find the equation for the line.

Input and Modeling: Start with a sample linear equation. As a class work together and break down the graph. Discussing the components that go into coming up with the equation. Explain how In- Out tables help to solve the problem. Student Practice, Checking for Understanding and Evaluation: 1. Have the students work in pairs, each with their own provided worksheet. 2. Each student is to work together to solve the problems on their sheet. 3. The groups will then present a problem on the board. 4. Review the problems that are presented on the board, fixing any mistakes and explaining how to solve each one. 5. Ask each student to revisit the Do-Now and hand it in. When the problem is re-graded correctly I will provide the homework assignment. Closure: As each student is working on the Do-Now again ask any question or comments from the students and when the students have handed that in provide them with the homework worksheet that they are to do for the next day.
