April 25, 2013 Lesson Reflection: SPARKLE-Spelling game

This was a co-teaching lesson with Miss Brittanie Vangelli and myself. This lesson was taught after second period and started at about 10:45am. Miss Vangelli and I collaborated to create a lesson plan for our spelling game Sparkle; we had to adapt the game for three different groups because there are three different spelling groups in the classroom. Our objective was that students will be able to spell their spelling list words correctly and will be able to reinforce how to spell their list words. The groups are ability based and have a specific focus each week for areas that students struggle in or areas for development. This lesson plan needed to be scripted more because there was co-teaching; I needed to know what I was to say and Miss Vangelli needed to know what she should say. This taught me about the importance of collaboration in planning. Another area for improvement was the modeling, Miss Vangelli and I needed to use a group of students to model the game but we did not think to do this on our own, Miss Refsin suggested it. Miss Refsin knew that if we told the students to make a circle but we did not do it ourselves than the game would not work. I did not feel as comfortable doing a co-teaching lesson and a spelling lesson; I was much more nervous. I did my best to not let the students see my nerves during the lesson. I feel as though this taught me to script my lessons more and to work on collaborating with my fellow teachers.
