Filipino American Community Scavenger Hunt Final Project
Filipino American Community Scavenger Hunt Final Project
Purpose:
There are several locations within San Francisco that are significant to Filipino American History and Community. This scavenger hunt is designed to bring the classroom out into the community in order to connect history, spaces, and people. Hopefully, this project will challenge the notion that Filipino culture is stagnant and that Filipino American history is only learned through textbooks. We also want you to have fun and build community with your fellow classmates.
Process:
Scavenger Hunt Each barangay must visit the 3 sites they are assigned. This must be accomplished with ALL you barangay members present and you need to take a documenting photo at EACH site. You must complete a site questionnaire for EACH site. Some additional research may be needed in order to complete the questionnaire. If you are visiting an organization or active business, please get some brochures/pamphlets to share with the class. You must also share a meal together as a barangay at a Filipino owned restaurant from the list provided. Additionally, you can choose to either interview a community member (from the list provided) or attend a community event. Scavenger Hunt Checklist -visit 3 sites and complete questionnaires -documenting photos/brochures and pamphlets -eat at a restaurant -interview a community member or attend a community event Paper Each person will write a 2-3 page reflection paper that answers the following: -Something significant you learned at each site
-How this process has made you grow as a person/student -How this process has changed your view of the Filipino American community and Filipino American history -Connect your experience to something youve learned in class this semester (i.e. racism, hegemony, Spanish colonization, American imperialism, gender issues, heteropatriarchy) Presentation You will have 15-20 minutes to present your scavenger hunt findings on 12/9. Each group must provide the class with a brief description about each site - making sure to include the sites history and significance. ALL barangay members must be involved in the presentation. You can present this in different mediums such as : Powerpoint: No more than 15 slides Skit: Must include all barangay members and have props/visuals (could be projections of photos) Music: Must be a collaborative process Poetry: Food: Be prepared to explain why your dish is significant and relevant to the project and the sites you visited. The dish should already be cooked and you must bring enough for the whole class to try.
