Liam OFlaherty

WAR

THE GAME

The art of war is played like a game of chess. In the story Liam depicts the characters as nothing other than mere objects. They are pawns in a bigger game of chess. The old lady used as an informant killed off like a pawn sent to try and break through the opponents defense. The sniper himself fighting against the other sniper like two pawns on a chess board.

CHARACTERS

None of the characters have names? To show that they are describing a wider group and not specific people.

NO REMORSE

No one is safe in war Old woman gets shot The sniper is a young man and in that time a young man was 14 The sniper shoots his brother No emotions

CAIN AND ABEL

The sniper was very eager to fight for his side Soon after he had killed the other sniper he felt ashamed of what he had done. Cain struck down abel and then felt the same horror the sniper felt after killing his brother. At first it seems like something that should be done, but afterwards the shame and self hatred for what you have done is too great.

STYLE OF WRITING

Uses a lot of descriptive language

The steel that covered the grey monster machine guns and rifles broke the silence of the night, spasmodically, like dogs barking on lone farms.

Suspense Language
Suddenly from the opposite roof a shot rang out and the sniper dropped his rifle with a curse. The rifle clattered to the roof. The sniper thought the noise would wake the dead. He stooped to pick the rifle up. He couldn't lift it. His forearm was dead. "I'm hit," he muttered.
