EXPRESSIONS AND VARIABLES

Numerical Expression - consists of numbers and operations. Ex: 4 10 or 4(10) is a numerical expression.

Variable - is a letter used to represent one or more numbers.

Variable Expression consists of number, variables, and operations. Ex: 4 d or 4d is a variable expression.

Evaluate a variable expression to find the value of the variable expressions by substituting a number for each variable, and then finding the value of the resulting numerical expression.

EVALUATING A VARIABLE EXPRESSION

Evaluate the expression 7 e when e = 350 to find how many pounds of vegetation an elephant eats in a week.

Solution: 7 e = 7 350
= 2450

Substitute 350 for e.

Multiply.

Answer: An elephant eats 2450 pounds of vegetation in a weeks time.

EVALUATING EXPRESSIONS WITH TWO VARIABLES

Evaluate the expression when a = 50 and b = 25. a. a + b = 50 + 25 = 75 b. ab = 50(25) = 1250 Substitute 50 for a and 25 for b. Add. Substitute 50 for a and 25 for b. Multiply.

EVALUATE THE EXPRESSION WHEN R = 60 AND S = 15

1. 90 + S

2. 115 - R
3. RS

4. R S
