Bienvenidos \ Welcome
Estamos convencidos de que en sus pginas podrn encontrar todo aquello que nuestra ciudad pone a disposicin de sus visitantes. crease the number of streets which contain Christmas lights, but the number of bulbs has been reduced. One example of this is in the Paseo del Parque, where there 7 arches of lights this year compared with 14 last year. However, not all the Christmas decorations consist of lights; some are plants. In fact, 60,000 poinsettias have been placed on roundabouts, in planters, on central reservations and in garden areas all over the city to decorate public areas for the celebration of the festive season.

Mlaga Port offers a wide range of restaurants and leisure facilities all through the day.

HE town of Casabermeja, which is 20 minutes from the city of Mlaga, can boast one of the most unusual monuments in the province, namely the cemetery of San Sebastin, which is one of the few cemeteries in Andaluca to have been officially classified as being of Cultural Interest. This graveyard, which is situated right beside the town, dates back to the 19th century and it is interesting to note the original shapes of the niches and tombs which, far from being gloomy, have an unexpectedly romantic appearance to such an extent that more than one poet has dreamed of his remains resting there. The cemetery can be seen from the road, especially the tallest parts. At one time this gave rise to the false belief that in Casabermeja the deceased were buried standing up.This was because of the architectural design of the niches in which, facing them, one can distinguish the following parts: Lower part: (The door through which the deceased is placed); Middle: (Commemorative plaque and decorations), andTop: (Front with architectural decoration). The architectural characteristics of this cemetery have been praised by numerous people, including famous writer Antonio Gala, who paid tribute to it in one of his newspaper articles. Casabermeja council wanted to thank him by reserving a niche for him in the cemetery. The response of this poet and playwright was brief: Im in no hurry.
Apart from the cemetery, the surroundings are also interesting. This part of the province is situated between the Natural Park of Los Montes de Mlaga and the Vega de Antequera. This area provides access to the Guadalmedina Valley, which descends to the heart of Mlaga city and at this time of year the mountainous countryside around the cemetery is green in contrast with the white houses of the village and the stark blackness of the Osborne Bull which has spent decades observing the passage of time from a nearby hill.. Throughout history, the people of Casabermeja have developed a reputation for the commemoration of their deceased and especially so on All Saints Day. This is, without a doubt, the most important day for those who wish to pay tribute to those who have gone before, and during the days beforehand the women of the town whitewash the niches and graves, decorate them with flowers and light candles to remember the dead. All together, this makes this cemetery an unusual place which is well worth a visit. VISITING TIMES: Weekdays: from 11.00 to 13.00 hours. Public holidays: from 11.00 to 13.00 and from 17.00 to 19.00 hours. Visiting times can change according to time of year, but these may be confirrmed at CasabermejaTown Hall (www.casabermeja.es)

LAGA has on tourism one of the main drivers of its economy. And for the cruise segment, the importance of the province is unquestionable as the port of Mlaga is the second largest of the peninsula and also it enjoys a continual growth in the number of scales, passengers and ships that choose Mlaga as a base port. So, the Costa del Sol Tourist Board is focused on the design of actions that lead to the promotion of this important segment. Embark on a cruise is a way of thinking about the holidays that is gaining more followers and to the Costa del Sol the growth of this segment is undenieble. This tourist segment is in a process of expansion and growth expectations of strong demand. However, we must not ignore that the future of this segment is determined by a number of factors to which attention must be given. They include the very segmentation of tourism, the phenomenon of multiholidays in families and the improvement in the quality of the scales. At a time when the segment is showing signs of such growth is to be applauded the creation of a specialized publication as Welcome to Mlaga from an industry that brings so many benefits to our destination.
RUISE tourism has become in recent years one of the fastest growing segments in Andaluca, the seven ports of the community have received a total of 742 ships with more than 1.7 million passengers last year 2011. This is a very attractive segment for the region, due to spending by cruise passengers in the destinations they visit during their tour and the interest shown by segments such as cultural and urban tourism, food and shopping. Moreover, our offer fits perfectly to the demands of these travelers thanks to a wide variety of tourism products and strategically located ports that allow to visit in a short lapse of time any destination in the community. Andaluca receives cruise tourists with open arms, a welcome to which sums his pages the magazine Welcome to Mlaga, a media that will enable travelers to visit the main attractions of a city that receives about the 60% of cruise passengers reaching our community.

Los Montes de Mlaga: The mountains which are a green lung for a large city
almost all the vines were affected by phylloxera, which destroyed almost all of the cultivation. As in many other parts of the province, the vines were changed for olive and almond trees, but with these types of tree the ground is left very unprotected. In fact, for decades they caused numerous catastrophes, floods and avalanches that created devastation and caused several deaths. Because of these tragedies, retention works such as channelling and reservoirs were carried out and the Natural Park was almost completely repopulated with pine trees. The ecosystem of this area has been completely modified by Man: It has passed from being a completely agricultural area to a forest zone in just a few years. As well as the pine trees which were used for reforestation, we can see oaks and cork oaks (a sign of the ancient woods which dominated the area), riverside vegetation and bushes. With regard to the fauna, due to the proximity of the Straits of Gibraltar, the visits of numerous species of birds who migrate to Africa are very important. There are also good-sized populations of wild boor, polecats, foxes, civet cats, weasels and rabbits; various types of reptiles, birds such as partridges, quail, turtle doves, wood pigeons and birds of prey, one of which, the toed eagle, is very common. Because of its proximity to the city, its multiple uses and its beauty, the Montes de Mlaga Natural Park is, without a doubt, a place for all the inhabitants of the city to escape to and enjoy and is well worth a visit for anyone who comes to the Mlaga area.

LAGA, under the name of Malaka (referring to the salting of fish), was founded by the Phoenicians around 800 B.C. as a trading place, following the colonisation which commenced in 1100 B.C. with the founding of Gadir (Cdiz). After the Greek domination which lasted for over 70 years, Malaga was ruled by the Carthaginians but after the PunicWars, which ended in the year 202 B.C. with victory by the Romans, the city passed into their domain under the name of Flavia Malacita, and became an important point of transit with communications to other Roman enclaves in the Peninsula and other Mediterranean ports. The Roman Theatre dates back to this period and although it is small in size it is one of the oldest in the whole of Hispania. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Mlaga was affected by the great migrations and settlements of the Germanic peoples, specifically the Siling Vandals who imported the Arian beliefs from the Orient. In the early 8th century the collapse of the gothic monarchy began and from the coasts of North Africa the Moors penetrated the Iberian Peninsula. Mlaga fell under their control in the year 743 and became a flourishing city, surrounded by a wall with five large gateways. The city comprised numerous walled districts and was crossed from East toWest by a road which linked the port and the Alcazaba fortress with the interior of the walled precinct. Separate from the rest of the city were the districts of traders from Genoa and the Jewish district. In the 13th century Abderramn III built the Atarazanas Gate (which is now the entrance to the indoor market). Although in the 14th century the first attempts at a reconquest took place, it wasnt until the end of the 15th century that the Catholic Monarchs succeeded in taking the city. Mlaga was conquered on August 19th 1487 (the last city to be conquered was Granada in 1492).With this conquest, religious
communities became a fundamental part of urban growth, with the poorer districts on the outskirts. A grand square was created for the first time - the Plaza Mayor, which is today the Plaza de la Constitucin as well as La Victoria and La Trinidad convents. The 16th and 17th centuries were characterised by the crisis which resulted in the expulsion of the Moorish converts on one hand and the bad harvests, the floods caused by the overflowing of the Guadalmedina river and the epidemics on the other. In the 17th century the port was built, and it was enlarged later.Although work began on the Cathedral in 1528, it was not finished until the 18th century: well into the Baroque period. In the same era, the port was enlarged once again, recovering some of its previous activity. In the 19th century Mlaga began important urban development, with a clear separation of the industrial area from that of large mansions and hotels. Calle Marqus de Larios and La Alameda opened. The economic and political crises which were due to the tyranny of King FernandoVII (who allowed the unjust shooting ofTorrijos and his men, whose remains lie in the square which is now called Plaza de la Merced and is a venue for different activities and festivals) are the outstanding negative features of the 19th century. The first decades of the 20th century were not very favourable but from the 1960s Mlaga was the scene of the tourism boom in Spain and millions of people chose to spend their holidays in the city, while thousands of foreigners decided it was the ideal place to live. It became the fifth most important city in Spain and a modern European capital, enriched by its international diversity and mixture of cultures. Since 1992 Mlaga has had good road infrastructure with magnificent national connections and it has one of the most important international airports in Europe.

Entrevista \ Interview
Gonzalo Rojo is one of the principle experts on flamenco in the whole country and is the president of the Pea Juan Breva.
-Has ta q u p u n to n e c e s ita e l f lam e n c o al turis m o ? -Vie n e n c o n in f o rm ac i n s o b re lo q u e e s e s ta trad ic i n m u s ic al? -En Mlag a n o s e r p o r f alta d e c an te ra p re c is am e n te ... -Para j ve n e s y p ara n o tan j ve n e s e s te m us e o e s to d a una re f e re nc ia, ya q ue e s t re p re s e ntad a la h is to ria d e e s ta trad ic i n.

Entrevista \ Interview
E is a true expert on the world of flamenco. For more than four decades Gonzalo Rojas has been a journalist and a critic of the cante jondo type of flamenco singing. He received the Welcome to Mlaga team at the Flamenco Museum of Mlaga, located right in the historic city centre, inside the Pea Juan Breva, of which he is president. -To what extent does flamenc o need tourism? -Flamenco is a great tradition, not only in Andaluca but in Spain as whole.Tourists always want something which is traditional to the place they are visiting and flamenco fulfils that desire perfectly. Many tourists come to this Flamenco Museum and they ask us if this is a flamenco bar because they really want to hear this music. -D o the y alre ady kno w anything ab o ut this m usic al traditio n? -They often know something of what flamenco is and what it represents. It seems that when they leave their own countries, they already have some information. They often refer to things like buleridas o alegridasand that shows that they know something. Obviously, they dont know what a sole is, or a martinete, but they do come looking for the essence of flamenco and that is noticeable. Then there are others who come because they are attracted most of all by the guitar, which is a fundamental instrument in flamenco. And of course, they are usually attracted by the dancing. -Mlag a is a c ity with stro ng links to flam e nc o , as c an b e se e n b y this m use um , b ut what m o re c o uld to urists b e g ive n in this re g ard? -I think Mlaga should have several specialist flamenco bars, the tablaos. Of course, this type of business is not easy to main-

tain financially because the flamenco artists have to be paid and so do the taxes on this type of establishment. Maybe the solution would be to free them at least from the municipal taxes during an initial period of five years and once that time has passed they could start paying them. Im convinced that many business people would decide to open tablaos if that were the case and would provide something that is wanted by many of those who visit the city. At present in Mlaga there are no tablaos. In Spain you can only find them in Madrid, Barcelona y Sevilla. -In Mlag a that is no t e xac tly due to a lac k o f yo ung tale nt -Definitely not, because at the moment this is a very good time for talented youngsters in this province, especially when it comes to the guitar, but also in flamenco dance and song.We have a lineup of artists which is so good that many of them perform elsewhere. -Fo r yo ung p e o p le and no t-so -yo ung p e o p le , this m use um is a c o m p le te re fe re nc e , b e c aus e the his to ry o f f lam e nc o is re c o rd e d he re . -Yes, we have everything. For example, there is a collection of guitars belonging to flamenco masters from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. We also have personal mementos of many artists, pictures by important painters, a wide selection of posters, programmes We also have a section dedicated to the verdiales type of music, in tribute to the mother of the world of flamenco. -Whic h p e rs o nal m e m e nto s d o yo u think stand o ut m o st? -Its difficult to say because we have
everything, from a cane which belonged to Antonio Chacn to an ornamental hair comb of La Macarrona and a guitar which was owned by Federico Garca Lorca. -Mlag a has m any e m b le m atic p lac e s re late d to the histo ry o f f lam e nc o , like the Chinitas p assag e way and c af . -We have a commemorative plaque there and not much more. This club was once interested in the Caf de Chinitas because of what it represented in the world of flamenco. The establishment still exists, but it is much smaller. The central bar and a few other elements remain. We thought that something ought to be done in the Caf and also the passageway to give them more life related with flamenco. You also have to bear in mind that what is today the Plaza de la Constitucin had a very large number of tablaos in the 19th century. In that area there wasnt only the Caf Chinitas, but also others like Caf Espaa, Caf La Loba, Caf del Suizo, etc... In that period Mlaga was one of the most important cities for flamenco. -A nd wh ic h im p o rtant p e rs o nag e s wo uld yo u m e ntio n e s p e c ially? -Juan Breva, of course, and not only because this club is named after him but also because he is one of the most important artists in the history of flamenco. In the 19th century he was the star of the whole of Spain. You only have to look at the press of that period to see how in Madrid he was admired by everybody. There are also other very important names like Paca Aguilera, who was from Ronda, and La Antequerana. Those are just some examples but there are many, in guitar, song and dance.

Dulces navideos
Polvorones, roscos de vino and turrn are some of the most popular cakes and sweets at this time of year in Spain.

Christmas sweets
LAGA is a province with a rich tradition in confectionary and this is particularly the case at important times of year such as HolyWeek and Christmas. For that reason, this is the ideal time to head for one of the most traditional establishments and buy some of these specialities, either to eat at once or to take home as a delicious souvenir. Look for names like turrn, mantecados and polvorones which, together with other types of confectionary, are part of the wide range on offer in the city and in villages in the countryside. With regard to the type of candy called turrn, the most delicious hand-made varieties are produced by Casa Mira, which also operates as an ice-cream parlour throughout the year. In its emblematic premises in Calle Larios, in the city centre, you will find a wide range on offer. However, these are not the only Christmas sweets which can be bought in the historic city centre. Traditional patisseries like Apara-
At this time of year you can buy traditional and delicious Christmas confectionary in the city of Mlaga and the villages
cio, Patheln, El Colmenero de Alhaurn and La Canasta, among many others, add a very sweet Christmas flavour to a stroll through the centre of the city. There, as well as the typical confectionary of the festive season, you will also find a wide range of traditional Mlaga cakes such as the borrachuelos and locas. But if a traveller has the chance to visit the rural part of Mlaga province, they will also discover the variety and quality of the confectionary of the villages. For example, Ardales is one of the municipalities with the longest tradition and largest number of establishments, where the excellent products of Marcos y Rivas can be found. Not far from there, in Carratraca, it is essential to visit the charming cake shop of Rosa, with its delicious roscos and biscuits. In Caete La Real, the best option is that of the Santsimo Sacramento convent, where the famous pestios of this town are made. In Sierra deYeguas, the Maldonado establishment, close to the main square of the village, offers a wide range of Christmas sweets although its star product, without a doubt, is the pionono, while in Cuevas del Becerro, LaTahona continues to make its polvorones and suspiros as it always has. In the area known as La Vega de Antequera there are also plenty of opportunities to buy traditional types of confectionary. It is often necessary to visit convents such as those in the village of El Torcal or Las Mnimas in Archidona,
although fewer sweets are produced at the latter these days because of the state of health of many of the nuns. In Cuevas de San Marcos, one small establishment is outstanding for the wide variety of traditional products which are made there. The owner, Rosario Gins, is an enthusiast for traditional confectionary and has recovered many old recipes to create sweets and cakes which would otherwise have faded into oblivion, like the pan de cortijo which is made with almonds, egg, spices and sugar. As it does not contain flour, this cake is suitable for coeliacs. Apart from this speciality, Rosario also makes other delights for the palate such as polvorones, made with olive oil or with butter, roscos de vino and flores de leche, among many others. And all of them have a common denominator: they are made with love and contain no preservatives or artificial colouring. In other words, just as they always used to be.

In fact, these are not really lakes but reservoirs which supply water to a large part of the province. After the heavy rainfall this autumn, they look spectacular. It is also surprising that a region in the south can have so many water resources in its interior.
many other options to take high quality photographs of landscapes in the area of the reservoirs. Just follow the roads to find other striking views, such as the House of the Conde del Guadalhorce, which is situated opposite El Kiosko restaurant. The possibilities of achieving truly postcardtype photos with our lenses increase considerably if we leave the road and walk along the different tracks which run through this area. This is highly recommended if time permits.

HOW TO TAKE IT
Taking photos such as that which illustrates this page is not particularly complicated if we visit the area of theThree Reservoirs (Guadalhorce, Guadalteba and Conde del Guadalhorce) which are linked by means of winding roads. One of these roads passes through the area to the north of the Guadalteba and it joins up with the Campillos road. Along this route we will find the place we are looking for, signposted Mirador de losTres Embalses. Just climb the steps for about one hundred metres until you see the reservoirs. There is a good view of the Guadalteba and the Guadalhorce. The Conde del Guadalhorce reservoir is behind the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes, which can also be seen clearly.
OTHER POSSIBILITIES
The works to build the Conde de Guadalhorce reservoir began in 1915 under the direction of engineer Rafael Benjumea, who in return for carrying out this project was rewarded with the title Conde (Count) de Guadalhorce. After almost seven years of works, the reservoir was officially opened by King Alfonso XIII, who was the grandfather of the present Spanish monarch, Juan Carlos I. Nearly half a century later the other two reservoirs were completed, the Guadalhorce and the Guadalteba. To make this possible, the village of Pearrubia and its Gobantes district had to be evacuated. Until a few years ago it was still possible to see the tower of its church when the water level dropped, but this had to be demolished because it posed an obvious danger to the hydro-planes which came to take water from the reservoir to extinguish forest fires.
