In what way do your media produce use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products

My media magazine is based on young males between the ages of 16-24. The magazine is targeted at the genre of Hip-Hop and RnB. The reason for this is because, in my research,II found out that people that I have conducted the research on where interested in these genres. In this question I will be breaking down the codes and conventions of a music magazine and how my magazines challenges, develops and forms this conventions.

Front cover
In my magazine I have challenged and develop the codes and conventions. On my front cover, the main image is of an up and coming new artist who is making a lot of headlines. This artist does not follow the typical hip hop artist. He breaks the codes and conventions in many ways and also has forms of a hip hop artist. Jamal Lewis is a unique artist who had been to university and believes education comes first and his music career comes second. The reason for this was because my target audience are students from sixth forms who are doing their Alevels and are into their studies so they could relate to him. The mode and address of the artist is him wearing a black and white tuxedo this had connotations of an induce and successful young man. this represents my target audiences because they are young men who want to be independent and successful so they want to be like him, successful at a young age. This shows that they have dreams and aspirations this goes along with the theory Maslows hierarchy ofneeds Maslow's hierarchy of needs is often represented as a pyramid with five levels of needs. is a motivation theory in psychology that argues that while people aim to meet basic needs , they seek to meet successively higher needs in the form of a hierarchy. He goes with the codes and conventions by Directly address the camera and showing that he is powerful. The main image takes over some of the masthead this is to show that the magazine is full of content.

The masthead typography of my magazine is bold and stands out. This is consistent with the codes and conventions of a magazines masthead. This is to show that the magazine is a powerful magazine which displays powerful music and artistes also it shows that the magazine is a masculine magazine so this supports that and goes with it the male audiences who see themselves as masculine. the mast head is masculinity because its bold and up case this represents power and strength. The masthead also breaks the codes and conventions of a masthead by half of it being

black and half of it being white this is different. In my research I havent seen any magazine with this type of colour co-ordination. The reason I have done this was because this shows that the artist is taking the different path to the other young black youths that are represented in the media; of being in crime and being shown with guns and drugs. Therefore the two colours go with the two sides of him. Black shows how he is thought to be and the white shows how he is an educated and successful young black man. This shows binary opposites. binary opposites is the way opposites are used to create interest in media texts, such as good/bad, coward/hero, youth/age, black/white. By Barthes and Levi-Strauss who also noticed another important feature of these binary opposites: that one side of the binary pair is always seen by a particular society or culture as more valued over the other.

The top banner shows a tag line which develops the codes and conventions of a magazine. This is not unheard of but its not a typical banner to do. I had done this to shows that my magazine is different and its better then any rnb and hip hop magazine in the UK and there is not many they mostly in the us. my magazine is the best rnb and hip hop magazine in the uk because my magazine offers my audiences way they could improve their studies like revision tips this is one of the ways its different also my makes the readers contact with the artiste in the magazine mostly the up and coming artiste which many young people are always interested in up and coming arties and young people are always looking for new music so the way its different is there is not many rnb music magazines in the uk which offer educational and up and coming arties

This is the bottom banner. It shows artists that are featured in the magazine andis conventional because they usually have this on their bottom banners.

I have used buzz words in my magazine. These are words that draw attention and will get you more readers. This uses the conventions of a magazine because all magazines have buzz words to draw in their audiences. one of the buzz word is A$AP ROCKY this is a new artiste which many people are interest in and listen to there for people would find this very eye catching so they would read my magazine. There are different typographies in my magazine for my sub stores. This is to show that the stories are all different and unique. Also the typography is in two colours to reinforce the brand identity. They are placed all around the main image to show they are different stories in the magazine but are not the main story, they are feature stories. This uses the codes and conventions of a music magazine which all have feature stories. Once I have looked at my research, they are all in different typographys and sizes . Also they have subheadings to give a sneak intro to the articles in the magazine so people could get in to it and would be interested to read the magazine. They are under the bold writing of the storeys in the magazine The background breaks the codes and conventions in many ways. The back ground is in two different colours to shows his two different sides. The black represents the dark side of who he is thought to be in the media because black has connotations of evil, and mystery, and the white to who he is a successful and educated young black male. This shows the binary opposites of who other artists in the hip hop industry are and who he is. Also the page has a gatefold front cover to explore who he is and to show this is a special edition issue to show his personality and who he really is. This challenges the codes and conventions of a music magazine because I havent seen any magazine which has a gatefold cover. This was done to challenge the codes and conventions and to shows those young black youths is not all the same and the media presents them in a negative way. A gatefold is when a page opens up front words in the middle and it closes like a gate. The main stories subheading is to present the main story in the magazine and to show the main attention is on this storey in this issue. This also is in the two different colours this is to show the two sides of who he is seemed to be and who he really is. The typography is in a masculine, classic and also bit quirky to represent his personality that he is different to other people in the industry to make him stand out.

The barcode in the magazine is in the bottom right of the page. The barcode makes the issue unique for its month this is following the codes and conventions of a magazine front page because on the entire magazine I had research they all had a bar code. On top of the barcode the price is there this is also following the codes and convention of a magazine because usually they have the price on top of the barcode. The colour scheme of my magazine is black and white. I only have two colours as my colour scheme this is breaking the code and convention of a magazine page the reason for this is because I wanted to present the main storey of the issue of the front cover as this was a special issue I wanted to bring in the personality of the artist in the magazine front cover. I used black and white to show the binary opposites of who he is. The black represents the ordinary hip hop artiest in the industry which are presented in a negative way which only rap about money, sex drugs and crime, but the white presents who he is someone who finished his education and talks about his life and how he wants to make change in his life and where he came from, change the lifes of other young black youths who also are having a difficult lifes and upbringing. Contents page The contents page typography is a bold and masculine typography. The reason for this is to represent the personality of the target audiences and readers who are young males between the ages of 16-24. They are masculine and think they have more power than other people because they are teenage young men and the attitude of male teenagers goes through weird stage at this time of their lives so this represents that. Therefore the typography is in black because the colour black has connotations of power. Therefore this creates a mode of address that represents my target audiences to make them feel powerful. This follows the codes and convention of a magazine page by having the word contents to show this is the contents page , the magazine I had research also had this The features of my magazine are on the contents page. The features are other stories that are featured in the issue. The features also come up on the front page. The features colour scheme goes with the rest of the issue to present the target audiences and creates the mode of address to make the audiences feel comfortable to read it. The features are stories that my target audiences would want to know about and are interested in. this comes from my research which I had asked who their favourite artistes where and would they looked up to in the music industry. This follows the codes and conventions of the music magazines I had looked at because they did not have many features. Also, I did not have many features because my target audience are young males these are people who dont have much time on

their hands and who get bored very easily. Therefore I thought to give them something short so they would be interested and would not get bored very easily. Also one of my question was do they read magazine and majority of them said no so I targeted to get more of them reading magazine and something that is short I think would get them readying. Personally as a young male in the age group of my magazine I would want something short and interesting to read instead of something to long that i would get bored of very easily. The main pictures of the contents page take up most of the page. The reason for this is to show they are the main stories of the magazine. They have a little sneak start to the story this is to get them reading and to get the target audience interested in the stories. There are large numbers to show the page numbers of the stories. This is a convention of a contents page on a music magazine. The colours of the numbers are black to go with the colour scheme. The image of the boy wearing a red jacket is Big sean, he is dressed to fit the mode of address,to make the audainces feel comfortable and relate to the audiance because this is the way they dress. Also this artist is a big hit artist which many young males listen to therefore they would be interested in him and would want to read about him and would get them to read my magazine and that was one of my goals. The picture of the female is Beyonce she is there to promote her new albumand her tour which at the summer of 2013. She is dressed in a way that makes her look vulnerable and submissive. This goes with The Male Gaze theory; that is the concept of gaze is one that deals with how an audiences views the people presented. For women this presents them in the way women are looked at in the media in the male point of view also how women look at themselves. This images she is presented in to pleasce the male viewers. Also she is represented in a way that she looks at herselfand that is confident in who she is, this is to present who she is and Beyonces is an independent and powerful women this would appeal to young men because they want women who are independentt but still beautiful. The third image is of the main story which is bigger then all the rest of the images to show thats the main story he is looking confident to present his personality. This is on the bottom of my contents page. This is the main social websites that young male youths go on. They are Facebook twitter and instagram. The reason I had put them on the page was because I had found out that in my research that may target audiences go on these websites very often there would be a free advertisement for people to go on my pages this would lead to people starting to read my magazine.

Synergy is the interaction of multiple elements in a system to produce an effect different from or greater than the sum of their individual effects. there for more people would know about my media magazine as I'm using more than one form of media.

These are the regulars of my magazine. Regulars are the stories that come up every issue. They are regulars that people want to know about and people keep up with. This is a convention of a magazine. These are the page numbers of the issue they are in black to go with the colour scheme of the magazine to connect with the rest of the magazine. These go with the code and convention of a magazine page all the magazine I had research had them The colour scheme of my contents page is black and white, this I have explained before it has a strong meaning behind it to portray the issues main topic on Jamal Lewis. I have broken the codes and conventions of a contents page colour scheme, because its meant to have three as the entire magazine had three colours. I also followed the codes and conventions of a double page spread to make it contact with the rest of the magazine to show that this is from the same magazine.

Double page spread

On my double page spread the main image is of the main story of the front cover the up and coming artist Jamal Lewis. I have chosen this image because it makes him look powerful, confident and independent. The reason I have made him look like this is because in the article he comes across as an independent person who does not rely on no one else but himself. This creates a strong mode of address for my target audiences who believe and see themselves as independent and aspire to be successful and who want to be like Jamal Lewis successful at a young age. He is wearing the tuxedo to express his life and to show he is not the typical hip hop artist that is shown in the everyday life around the media. He is looking straight at the camera to show his power and to show he is not threatened by anyone in the industry. I have followed the codes and conventions of a music magazine by making the image large and take up a full page this is common on most music magazines in the industry. This is because they want to show that this is the main artist in the magazine and is based on him. There is also a little post note to give information of the artiste only some of the magazine has this. I decided to do this because as my artiste is an up and coming artist I thought people would want to know some personal information about him, to make the target audiences feel like they know him so they are comfortable.

This is the sub title of my double page spread this is a code and convention of a music magazine as most of the magazine I had research had a sub title on the double page spread. The subtitle is to explain the main title and it usually sums up the story of the double page spread. This shows that the main artistes a powerful and independent artiste and he does not need any one. This fits the mode of address as young males that are in my target group look at themselves as independent young men who like to see themselves as a strong male figure.

This is the main article of my double page spread. This follows the codes and conventions of a magazine because the article is in three columns this also takes up a full page and this is a code and convention of a double page spread as the research I had done on other music magazines all have three columns. Also I have a small picture of the artist this is a feature I wanted to add as not many of the magazines had a small picture in there double page spread.

This is a banner at the bottom and top of my double page spread I had done this to make the page fit with the front cover and contents so it all contacted and showed

that they all were from the same magazine to create Brand identity. There are also numbers at the two sides of the magazine to show he page numbers of the page. This is a codes and convention all the magazine have a page number they fit in with my pages also. The colour scheme of the double page spread also goes with the rest of the pages to make them connect

The main title of the double page spread is called mirror the reason behind this is because the artiste sees himself as an inspiration to himself so he does not look up to anyone but himself because so many people in his life had let him down. So he believes when he needs inspiration he looks int the mirror and motivates himself. I had made the R reflect because to show the mirror reflection of himself so the represents him. This creates a strong mode of address for the target audiences who see them self as independent. The colour of the main title represent himself the white has connotations of pure and unique and he is pure to the industry and he different to the rest of the artiste in the industry. The typography of the title is bold and large and takes up large spaces this goes with the codes and convention of a double page spread as all the pages had a large name to show that this was the name of the article and to catch the readers attention. This also is connecting with the readers to make them feel masculine as all youngs want to be muscling and a strong male figure.
