In this phase, the project manager coordinates the work of the project team. There are activities that are key to the project success. The project manager must lead the project team and manage relationships with stakeholders, all while also executing the plan, recording progress and updating the plan. Leading a successful project team requires the effective use of the resources involved within the project and the development of individual and group skills to enhance the project performance. Issues within the execution of the project management plan can be alleviated with a plan that includes planning for the execution and for change and how you will accommodate change during the execution phase. Collaboration between departments and among team members is just as critical during this phase as in any of the preceding phases. During the execution phase of the project, the team manages the scope, schedule, budget, sponsor and stakeholder expectations, and risks. During this phase the pace of the project picks up considerably. In this phase the project manager is critical because the project will remain in flux throughout this phase. He or she must ensure the day-to-day operations of the project execution are carried out according to plan. In addition to carrying out the project plan, the project manager must manage relationships between team members and stakeholders. In this way, the project manager acts as the team's coach, making sure everyone keeps on task and schedule and that everyone works together collaboratively. It is also important for the project manager to ensure all team members fully understand the expectations of them. He or she must also help the team members adapt to change as it occurs throughout this phase.
