Facts About Coal Seam Gas

Coal Seam Gas or CSG is a naturally occurring fossil fuel, like crude oil and coal. This is found in the gaseous state and is highly combustible because 97% of its constituent is methane gas making it an ideal choice for commercial usage. It is extracted from a depth of 300m to 1000m currently and is abundantly found in Australia especially in regions of Queensland and New South Wales. When compared to burning of coal, CSG emits much less amount of greenhouses gasses and is more environment friendly but requires a lot of fresh water for extraction which is becoming a source of worry for many farmers as ground water levels are reported to go down. Currently 20% of the needs of Australian population are fulfilled by coal seam gas reducing oil imports thereby improving the foreign trade balance. There have been some explosive growth in terms of investments in the CSG rich areas in the past decade, CSG extraction has been happening since 30 years but Australia witnessed such growth only in the past decade which resulted in creation of thousands of jobs and reducing dependency on Middle East for energy needs. Currently some 300 Giga-litres of water is being used and farmers are afraid of toxic gas release which could leave their fertile land barren as most of the pipelines pass through such areas but government is taking a lot of precautions and has padded itself against any such accidents.
