The beginning of One Voice, Susan tells of here troubled childhood as it relates to her English speaking.

As a child she was at a disadvantage because of her cultural background and neighborhood language/slang. He parents worked so that she could attend a good school, but that did not directly help her broken English.

Madera stuck to what she was good at, and it helped to do patch work on her broken English. She doesnt exactly resolve her issues. Our childrens speech patterns were picked up from the main caregiver in our home, me. When I hear one of our boys say something incorrectly, I explain why it is wrong, and tell them the correct way to say it. Obviously she still speak in her neighborhood language; subsequently, her children have partaken into learning it. Why did she allow this? I see this as giving them the opportunity to know what is acceptable and what is not.
