EDUC 6331 Administrative Internship Overview of Projects/Tasks

Area of Concern The effect of low vocabulary comprehension, retention and acquisition on test scores of at-risk students The accountability of students, parents, teachers and administrators when concerning student discipline

Needs Assessment Previous test data showed large achievement gaps between at-risk students and students who were not considered at risk All school parties (Administrators, teachers, students and parents) were operating under different discipline expectations and procedures. These differences created confusion and disagreement between groups Daily observation of a large number of students arriving to classes late on a regular basis

Projects Action Plan Conducted an action research study concerning the effectiveness of evidence-based vocabulary strategies Conducted a needs assessment and a revised discipline plan and revised procedure was implemented

Evaluation Data from the study supported that evidence-based vocabulary strategies are effective and help to improve test scores of at-risk students Administrators, students, teachers and parents have a clear and improved understanding of how discipline will be managed and what discipline procedures will be followed consistently

Competency addressed C 001, 002, 004, 005, 007

Created and implemented a new tardy policy to hold students accountable for being tardy to class, and to reward students for arriving to class on time consistently

New tardy card policy had some minor issues initially, however policy has been effective in decreasing student tardiness

Fire drill evacuations and accompanying procedures were unstructured and time consuming

Observation of multiple fire drill evacuations and procedures that needed more structure and minimal evacuation time

Designed and created a fire drill indicator sign for every teacher to hold in the air (100% or Need Assistance) after accounting for all students during fire drill evacuations

Teachers are using fire drill signs on a consistent basis and have commented that the signs are extremely convenient
