Project Instruction: Frame Analysis

The figure shows a typical floor plan (roof, 3rd, 2nd, 1st and ground) for a four storey commercial building. Given the following data: - Floor height = 3.6 m - Foundation to ground floor = 2 m - All main beams are 250 mm wide x 650 mm depth - All secondary beams are 150 mm wide x 500 mm depth. - All columns are 300 mm x 300 mm - All slabs are 175 mm thick

TASK
Determine the vertical actions acting on the beams. Carry out the sub-frame analysis (braced case)for each level of the 2-D frame. Use one level sub-frame. Calculate the static horizontal wind action acting on the 2-D complete frame. Carry out the analysis for the 2-D complete frame subjected to the horizontal wind action. Use cantilever method. Carry out the sub-frame analysis (unbraced case) for each level of the 2-D frame. Use one-level sub-frame.

Determine the envelop bending moment and shear force diagrams for the braced case. Sketch the diagrams on the 2-D complete frame. Determine the envelop bending moment and shear force diagrams for the unbraced case. Sketch the diagrams on the 2-D complete frame. Based on the envelop bending moment and shear force diagrams, identify the bending moments and shear forces to be used in designing the beams. You can make any relevant assumptions to calculate the wind action.
