The word teleological is derived from the Greek word telos which means end or purpose.

A better description for the teleological argument is the argument from design. Design argument is posterior means this means that they come from experience. This argument was put forward by st Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274). He was a monk and a catholic who was highly regarded by Roman Catholics. His argument is that non intelligent material things produce beneficial order, and therefore require intelligent being to bring this about i.e. God. Aquinas view on nature was that things develop towards the realisation of end that is internal to their own natures. An archer must direct an arrow. Also god must direct nature. Aquinas said that there cannot be purposefulness without guiding intelligence.
