Welcome to the first Edinburgh Festival of Cycling, taking place with the support of The City of Edinburgh Council, Alpine Bikes, The Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative and the Embassy of Denmark. Edinburgh Festival of Cycling Ltd. is a new not-for-profit social enterprise, and we will be running the festival annually as part of the Edinburgh Festival programme. The SKELF is our name for the cool new bike skills park planned in the centre of Edinburgh (at the Braidwoods between St Leonards and Dumbiedykes). This fun and informal launch event is a chance to find out more about the proposals and experience first-hand the Braidwood proto-trails (on a tandem MTB no less), listen to (possibly) shady music on Hubstep (pedal powered PA system), get your bike fixed, and maybe even eat from the BBQ. Cycle Speedway Taster for Children


Redbraes Park Cycle Speedway Track, Redbraes Place, off Broughton Road, EH7 4LJ Saturday 15 June: 10am 4pm
Children will be given expert tuition from British Cycling coaches on how to ride cycle speedway bikes (no gears, no brakes, free wheel) safely around the outdoor Redbraes Park track before having the opportunity to take part in some practice races. Four riders at a time round four fast laps of the track! There will also be demonstrations by top riders from the Edinburgh Falcons Cycle Speedway Team and Youth Teams. Bikes and helmets will be provided but long trousers (not too baggy), a long sleeved top and gloves are strongly recommended when riding on the blaze track. This event is suitable for children between the ages of 10 and 16 accompanied by a parent / responsible adult (who might even like a go). donations to the SSCSL are welcome on the day. Extreme Unicycling Demonstrations and Come & Try

The UKs only Extreme Unicycling Display Team. Like BMX and trials biking, but with one wheel, because its already been done on two. Watch the current UK champions negotiate obstacles and throw the laws of physics out of the window. Mikael Colville-Andersen, CEO of Copenhagenize, will be giving a talk on Bicycle Culture by Design. Copenhagenize.com started in 2007, highlighting cycling life in Copenhagen. Forty years ago Copenhagen was just as car-clogged as anywhere else, but now 36% of the population arriving at work or education do so on bicycles, from all over the Metro area. 50% of Copenhageners use bicycles each day. They all use over 1000 km of bicycle lanes in Greater Copenhagen for their journeys. Copenhagenizing is possible anywhere. Coastal Night Ride

Ever wondered what its like to cycle through the night, on quiet roads? Edinburghs first organised Coastal Night Ride (approx. 40 miles) will take place on the night of the summer solstice, and a full moon. Well be cruising along the coast from Edinburgh through scenic East Lothian, led by an experienced ride leader. Theres also a yummy breakfast available at the end. Leith Cycle Co will be providing mechanical support on the Night Ride. You can also book your bike in for a discounted tune-up the week before, or rent one of their bikes for the night. Carbon Cycle talk

In 2006 outdoor philosopher Kate Rawles cycled 4,553 miles from Texas to Alaska, following the spine of the Rocky Mountains as closely as possible. This is Kates story of the trip, in which she not only deals with the rigours of the journey, but does constant battle with her own ideas and assumptions, which ultimately helps us to cross the great divide between where we are on climate change, and where we need to be.

The fastest Woman to Cycle the World

In December 2012, Juliana Buhring became the first women to set a record for Fastest world circumnavigation by bicycle. Julianas 18,060 mile journey took her across four continents and nineteen countries, in a total time of 152 days, with 144 days on the bike. This is her story.

Laid Back Sunday Tour (Ligfiets Zondag)

Join a friendly ride to the coast with a chance to see and try out some of Edinburghs most unusual bikes, trikes and tandems on the Silverknowes promenade beside the North Sea. There will be lunch and demos at Silverknowes after 12pm. You can try a trike, tandem or learn to ride a ligfiets, with mechanical support from The Bicycle Works. The Scottish Cycle Messenger Association is hosting its second annual hill climb up the Queens Drive. Can you be the fastest to slog it up the one mile ascent? Will you be crowned the Arthurs Seat Hill Climb Champion 2013 and take away the trophy?

SkyRide Local rides are guided by friendly British Cycling Ride Leaders along scenic planned routes. There will be something for everyone whether youre building your confidence or are already comfortable on a bike and looking for a challenge. All rides are free and are grouped for different levels. Whichever you choose, youll be riding on safe routes, in good company. Easy Ride: Meadows Meander until approx. 11.15am (actual ride time 30 minutes) Steady Ride: Ride to Balerno until approx. 12.45pm Challenging Ride: Midlothian Explorer until approx. 1.45pm All rides return to the Meadows. An easy bike ride especially for families and those less confident on the roads. Well be cycling slowly, en masse, on cycle paths and quiet roads from Victoria Park to Portobello beach. Meet at Polwarth Parish Church, 36 38 Polwarth Terrace, EH11 1LU Sunday 23 June: 12.30pm 3.30pm
A gentle ride, suitable for all ages, on off-road paths to Spylaw Park, Colinton, where we will enjoy a picnic. There will be time for stone skimming, Frisbees and the swing park before cycling back. A performance of the poetry and music from the 1957 Flying Scot artists book which features a crown of sonnets by Rab Wilson, a suite of music by Ben Bryden and linocut images by Hugh Bryden, all centred around a classic Scottish racing bicycle. Over 18s only.
