Dear Mr. Ed Crenshaw: Larry B. Johnson
Tony Gentry
I am writing on behalf of the Emerald Coastkeeper, Inc., a chapter of the Waterkeeper Kim Kirschenfeld
Alliance, Inc., also known as the “Riverkeepers”. With the announcement that Publix Jemison Mims
Corporation has recently purchased the former Albertson’s Grocery located at Brent Lane Charles Morgan
and 9th Avenue in Pensacola, Florida, we would like to welcome this Publix location to the Crawford Rainwater
City of Pensacola.  Phillip Woolley
Matt Schultz
There are suggestions that the existing Albertson’s buildings will be demolished and new Ned McWilliams
construction will take place. With this in mind, the Emerald Coastkeeper, Inc. would
encourage Publix Corporation to consider constructing more eco-friendly structures and Executive Director
parking surfaces at this site. As you know, this property is adjacent to the environmentally Carol Moore
sensitive Carpenter’s Creek watershed and with that in mind, we would hope Publix
Corporation would make every effort to provide a better means of stormwater treatment for COASTKEEPER®
the runoff coming from your site.  Long ago, past construction practices resulted in the
mowing down of many trees from this site which resulting in a negative economic hardship Taylor “Chips” Kirschenfeld
to the community. Many residents who live along Carpenters’ Creek and along Bayou
Texar are members of the Coastkeeper organization and have worked to improve the controls
and treatment of stormwater runoff that occurs along their shores. Carpenter’s Creek flows through Bayou Texar into
Pensacola Bay where many residents, recreate, fish and otherwise enjoy the waterfront amenities.  Unfortunately, Bayou Texar
has consistently been marked unsafe for swimming due to various pollutants carried offsite by stormwater, including those that
flow down from Carpenter’s Creek from the commercial development at or near 9th and Brent. We have high expectations
that Publix Corporation will work with us to improve the water quality of this watershed and implement eco-friendly surfaces
that allow more percolation through the ground and less sold concrete surfaces that allow direct flow of stormwater.

Additionally, we would hope Publix would construct tree islands in the parking lot which would provide additional shading, a
more aesthetically pleasing look for this store and would help absorb the heat that an “asphalt desert” creates.  We would
invite Publix to meet with the Coastkeeper and our Board of Directors to discuss in greater details suggestions for
environmental improvements and to enter into a partnership with the Coastkeeper to maintain the natural beauty that is in daily
peril in the Pensacola area. We will track our partnership progress on our website, www.emeraldcoastkeeper.org.

Again we are delighted to have Publix contribute to the economic growth of our city and look forward to working with you in
the future.  Feel free to call our office at (850) 429-8422 and we will set up a meeting for all interested parties.

Sincerely,
Larry B. Johnson
