Part A (Answer All the Questions) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Define angle of friction and coefficient of friction.

State the law of Dry Friction. What is coloumb friction? When do we say the motion of a body is impending? Distinguish between centroid and center of gravity. Part B

(5 x 2 = 10)

(Answer all the questions. Question 6 is Compulsory.) 6. Locate the centroid of plane area shown in below figure. (8)

7. (a) A block of weight W 1=1290 N rests on a horizontal surface and supports another block of weight W 2=570 Non top of it as shown in figure. Block of weight W 2 is attached to a vertical wall by an inclined string AB. Find the force P applied to the lower block that will be necessary to cause the slipping to impend. Take, Coefficient of friction between blocks 1 and 2 = 0.25 and Coefficient of friction between block 1 and horizontal surface = 0.40

(OR)

(b) A pull of 250 N inclined at 300 to the horizontal plane is required just to move a body kept on a rough horizontal plane. But the push required just to move the body is 300 N. If the push is inclined at 30 0 to the horizontal, find the weight of the body and coefficient of friction. (16) 8. (a) Two blocks A and B of mass 50 kg and 100 kg respectively are connected by a string C which passes through a frictionless pulley connected with the fixed wall by another string D as shown in fig. Find the force P required to pull the block B. Also find the tension in the string D. Take coefficient of friction at all contact surfaces as 0.3. (16)

(OR) (b) A ladder of weight 1000 N and length 4 m rests as shown in fig. if a 750 N weight is applied at a distance of 3 m from the top of the ladder; it is at the point of sliding. Determine the coefficient of friction between ladder and the floor. (16)
