Diabetes is a disease where your body cannot regulate your glucose, or blood sugar, properly. With care, diabetes is a disease you can usually live with but sometimes it gets really difficult and you can lose function of your kidneys, your circulatory system, eyesight or some nerves.

There are two types of diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 appears to be a problem of the immune system and you cant really prevent it. Type 2 is sometimes preventable, since, along with being related to genetics, it can also be affected by your diet and exercise.

Scientists believe that Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. Thats when the body reacts to harmless cells or substances as if they were harmful. The immune system sends a response that destroys good cells or substances, which is a problem because the body actually needs them. In the case of Type 1 diabetes, the immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin.

Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children but sometimes adults get it too. And its pretty rareonly about 10 percent of diabetes cases are Type 1. You usually have to take injections for the rest of your life if you have Type 1 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is often genetically inherited, so it can run in families. But Type 2 diabetes can also be caused by diet, exercise, and age. You can usually treat Type 2 diabetes with diet and exercise changes, but many people also have to take medicine or injections of insulin.
