In this book, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Tom, the main character, starts out as a liar, a selfish person,

and a careless person. However, throughout this book he transforms into a great, mature, selfless, and kind young man. Unlike Huck, Tom is a dynamic character. In Toms incredible journey, Tom changes in many ways, he gives people hope, he thinks of others, and most importantly, he turns from selfish to selfless. To begin, in this novel, Tom has changed by thinking of others. For example, he said, Aunt Polly, it aint fair. Somebodys got to be glad to see Huck. (Twain, p.131) This happens when they come back from Jacksons Island and attend their own funeral. I think that Tom has become more grown-up by thinking of someone who not everyone likes. He is standing up for Huck. This good deed shows the change that has occurred in Tom. Next, Tom changes by turning from selfish to selfless. When Tom risks his privacy and his safety to tell what is right and true, he turns selfless and kind. One of the many people in the court room said, Speak out my boy dont be diffident. The truth is always respectable. (Twain, p.170) This quote is saying that they want Tom to say the truth and not be scared of what else will happen. I think Tom did the right thing even if he took a while. By standing up for Potter, Tom shows the change that he made. Finally, another one of Toms changes during this book, is giving others hope even if the situation is hopeless. For example, Tom said, "Cheer up, Becky, and let's go on trying." (Twain, p.224) Tom tries to make Becky feel better and not let her give in to the constant thought of wanting to die. I believe by not giving up on Becky, Tom realized his purpose in life. By giving Becky hope Tom shows change in himself. In conclusion, Tom really does change into a person who gives others hope, is selfless, and thinks of others also. Tom is a dynamic character, which means he changes though out the book. Even though Tom started out as a mischievous, rough, and rowdy boy, he changed greatly. I truly think that Tom was always a kind person he just had to find it in himself.
