Measures Of Dispersion

By: Jasmine Singh Bhanwar Apandeep Singh

What is dispersion?
statistical measures that summarise the amount of spread or variation in the distribution of values in a variable.

degree of the scatter or variation of the variables about central value

Properties of a Good measure of dispersion

It should be rigidly defined. It should be simple to understand & easy to calculate. It should be based upon all values of given data. It should be capable of further mathematical treatment. It should have sampling stability. It should be not be unduly affected by extreme values.

Range

Quartile Deviation or Semi-inter quartile Range

Mean Deviation

Standard Deviation

RANGE
Difference between the highest (maximum) and lowest (minimum) value in the distribution of values.. Symbolically, R=LS Where L = Largest value, S = Smallest value, R = Range Example: Weekly income of 10 people:

Range is maximum income minus minimum income: 330-180 = 150

Q.D=

Q3 Q1 2

Where Q3 = Upper (Third) quartile, Q1 = Lower (First) quartile

The relative measure of quartile deviation is defined as,
Q3 Q1 Coefficient of Q.D. = Q3 Q1

MEAN DEVIATION
absolute difference between each value of the statistical variable and the average.
